StarBase 64

Hi

After a few days production my new EV (O, N) site is finally up and almost running.

I would really like as much feedback as possible for my new EV, EVO and EVN site as possible to make it a usful resourse for EV players.

Look nice pal! I could go on forever, being a huge EV, EVO fan, so here are my thoughts. luckily they dont go on forever...

  1. If you make the backgrounds black, rather than white <body bgcolor="black">, it will look a lot more organized. if you want to keep the look of the window, maybe give it a border. A double bar......white or maybe light green....

  2. I LOVE that map. it is amazing. good work!

  3. I also love your use of EV and EVO windows all over the site. it is very very cool. Keep up the good work.

Nice Site, looks good, but I have a suggestion: Color the background black. Otherwise looks pretty good!

P.S. Try to keep it updated with new and cool downloads. Thanx, :).

Instead of a black background, use a background image with an ev theme. EV has stars and planets behind its windows. Try a nebula or something. Maybe add a radar map, weapon display, and target scan down the right side of the page.

In general I disapprove of black backgrounds, but EV is a space-based game, so it may be appropriate. Black is really overused on the web already (this web board, over half the sites in EVula's webring) and suggests a dark, depressing/scary/angry mood. Do anything that makes sense to avoid a completely black background.

To Ensign Paris:
You do not need a table 809 pixels wide to display an EV dialog. You should center the table in the browser window, size it to 606 pixels wide, and have one cell for the imagemap. The precision layout grid is somewhat broken in GoLive 4, avoid it. Lose the webcounter. It tells your visitors nothing (and is currently broken). Drop the frameset, it confuses my browser back button. Your real URL is not that embarassing. You can set up an invisible auto-redirect from (url="http://"http://starbase64.brooklineuk.com/")http://starbase64.brooklineuk.com/(/url) to your real stuff instead, see the GoLive actions panel for details.

heres the thing: please dont do this! a nice black background does not distract from your content. a busy one with stars and radar and whatever else you might put on it just distracts from the content especialy if it looks like you could click it (like a radar thing might). plus it will load slower. a black background would be good, a gimmicky background full of shiny things would not!! hee hee 😉 😉

I don't like black backgrounds. Reading white on black is very hard on the eyes and is also a real nuisance when you want to print or make a copy of something.

Ensign: I agree with magicianeer in that the usual use of framesets can make it pretty tough to navigate a website. Most visitors to a site expect to be able to bookmark a page they find interesting, and they expect to be able to use the 'back' button. The way that most folks employ frames makes both of those conventions impossible. On the other hand, most folks agree that the whole stationary-menu-with-scrolling-pages thing is pretty cool (at least, I think so). The trick is to have that while making sure your visitors can browse easily.

The answer is provided on a very helpful site authored by Claes Löfqvist. He discusses the difference between good and bad use of frames, and teaches you how to convert a badly-framed site into a user-friendly experience. Claes' command of English is a little rocky (though I daresay that his Swedish is excellent), but it shouldn't be a real problem. Follow the link below, and good luck!

Thanks for all the great info,

I am thinking of making the background black, I most probebly will except I thought that people would object so I was wrong, Doh!

The idea behind the Frame Set is that I have an advert with out a banner or other annoying picture. There is an advert on the webboard but this was unavoidable because otherwise I would have to pay and that would mean putting a banner ad on the main site!

Having Starbase64.brooklineuk.com ties along with my other site which are ferraripitstop.brooklineuk.com and my own software house website (url="http://"http://www.brooklineuk.com")http://www.brooklineuk.com(/url).

Also the Colinrose account on my server is very easy to access but has a long address so I shortened it.

Will look in to altering that though.

Also. Please give feed back on the design on my new not EV(o) site at:
