Try using it to hold fighters still while you puond them, or any ship for that matter, it's quite handy. Tractor them from behind and it'll take them a while to turn around to use their secondarys, meanwhile you'll be pounding them with turrets.

You can drag the lightning escorts to the kestrel after it is disabled. The lightings must must be disabled. After you drag them to the kestrel, board it and get the lightnings. then you can sell them for credits.

Or if you are flying a Kestrel you can keep them. I had one once where I acquired an extra 8 Lightnings this way. It almost isn't cheating.
