Let's start some controvercy
Wich projectile weapon is better? Missles or Torpedoes?
Misles: Comparitively short range, good homing, distracted by asteroids, fair amount of damage, fast.
Torpedoes: VERY long range, poor homing, distracted by interference, good 'n' hard damage, slow.
The conclusion: missles by a long shot.

Torps are MUCH better. They are cheaper, have a longer range, and have more dammage. The launcher may take up more space, but it pays off in the long run. And about the homing, torps home just as well as missiles, and they CANNOT be jammed, which you CANNOT say about missiles. As long as you know how to use em, Torpedos can kick a missle any day, and badly.

As for anti-fighter weapons, missiles rock. Against slow moving warships, they stink (or at least don't do to well). As for torpedoes, they don't do to well against fighters, but rock against warships. Rebel Destroyers are an example of that. Because they have more torpedoes, and can shoot torpedoes faster than a Confed Frigate, it gives them a massive tactical advantage.
It all depends on what you're using the missile or torpedo against.

I use both: missiles for fighters and other small ships, and torpedos for warships. I usually keep more torpedos than missiles, though.
I've found proton turrets are generally just as good (and cheaper) at getting rid of fighters as missiles
Two missle racks take up 20 tons of space, and two torp launchers take up 50. That's an extra 30 tons of space left over for missles, wich adds up to MUCH more damage. And, as I recall, NPC ships don't carry jammers.

I usually use 1 torp launcher. Slower rate, but more space for torps. I'm a torp person.

I am in total agreement with you on this.

Some clarification is in order:
How are torpedoes better against warshps? Their still slower! A little evading and any ship can shake a torp!
p.s. Even if you cary one torp launcher, thats still 5 extra tons of space that is taken up!
Yea but usually you fight the computer (what, all the time not just usually). They aren't really know for being able to manuever their warships away fom torps.
------------------ It is only a scratch -I cut off your arm!! No you didn't
Torpedoes are better because the computers don't run away, unless there unarmed which won't be nessasary because there no threat. Plus if your fast, you can chase your torpedoes while shooting more, then it will be like you have 6 torpedoe launchers and you can eliminate the enemy faster.

I agree with you totally. I've seen Rebel Destroyers in action, and they prove your point exactly. Confed Frigates, on the other hand, aren't fast enough to do that, which gives the Rebel Destroy a large advantage in combat when fighting a Confed Frigate. That's why they can beat them so easily (also in part because Rebel Destroyers use their heavy rockets alot and they are faster).

I agree with you on this. AI ships never try to evade torpedoes, even if they're running away! They just go in a straight line, they never try to evade anything! However, if you're attacking fighters, they may move around alot, giving the impression they are trying to evade your weapons.
I think Torps are better. More destruction. Cant be jammed... If you worry they are too slow to get a fighter, youre a poor pilot. When you shoot a slow moving guided weapon, it should be directly at the enemy.. Head on if possible. If you cant maneuver your ship directly in front of the enemy and start firing, your ship needs some upgrades. Any ship can be made a warship as long as it has enough weapon space for a torp launcher and a few cannons and/or turrets.
