I havent played EV since summer 1996. However I have played EVO quite a lot since then, which, as far as I understand, has a more advanced engine etc. So my question is this: why do people still play EV and make plugins for it? This is an honest question. I really want to know. What do you veteran players find in EV thats so good you keep making plugs and playing the game rather than concentrating on EVO (which there are less plugs for, I think)?

Some of us can't get used to Override. EVO is too bloated, you can tell it was made in a hurry. On the other hand, you can tell a lot of care went into EV. EV plug-ins are easier to make as well, not as much data to worry about.

I prefer the storyline in EV. It's a traditional one, yes--ragtag rebels v. haughty empire--but one that I enjoy wherever it pops up (EV, Star Wars, et cetera). And I prefer the ships in EV--to me, they just look better. And finally: I played EV first (since it came out before Override); it set the standard.

Because EV doesn't have useless crap coming out the wazoo. And yeah, I can say wazoo, all the cool kids are doing it!

I like EV better because, when EVO came out it was cool, but all of a sudden it got really boring. I also hate games where you have to go all the way around the galaxy to start a string of missions with a race. It takes to long and it wastes your money if you don't have a lot of it. EVO is just kinda dumb because of UE I think. Has crappy rockets, blaze turrets suck, hunter missles are heavy and expensive, their turning sucks. Then the purple guns (I forgot what they are called) they reach a far distance but they are kinda cheap and heavy. It takes forever to get the stupid UE Cruiser. Igadzra is just a joke to get on their side, same with Zidegar. Azdgari Ships suck really bad, The Igazra is the cheapest ship made. SAE modules are cheap. The zidagar beam sucks. Display rockets are dumb, Cresent Warship is to easy to get. Cresent Fighters are cheap if your a little person. The Voinian Dreadnought is a cheap heap, it's hard to kill, the stupid F-25 mission is a joke because you have to jump everywhere. If you go on the Voinians team then they still hate you if you abort their missions and the Voinian Cruiser sucks. Turreted rockets suck. The Elmagian people are dumb because their "warships" suck, those stupid armor thing turrets they aren't turrets they suck, "UE" Renegades (near UE space) are stupid because the Turncoats get so many feakin missles that they kill you. The Pariah mission is friken hard because you die before you can get a shot off. The "missle jammer" kinda works but most of the time it doesn't. Those idiot people (above UE space) are dumb because the "gunship" that they make is dumb. Zachit is a joke. There are almost zero missions for the renegades. The galaxy is humongous. Too many uninhabited systems. And in EV it's easier to kill pirates and they accually have money in them, it's also easier to kill Matt Burch and Andrew Welch (no offence Andrew but his Burchness is kinda just a little bit harder to take his Burchness's 20 million on the ship) I'll probably have more to say but if you have a problem with this reply you asked for it and you should go to the EVO webboard!!!!!!!!!
That's enough punishment, Kryptauros

Hmm roughly the only reason I play EV is because of Pale that, in my opinion, is the single greatest 'traditional' EV plugin (traditional - you're a merc resolving a war). Since I hacked EVO to run the EV scenario, I really don't play EV.
EV does have the more compelling story, but it's clearly less sophisticated than Override. Graphics are noticeably better on some ships - not all. Sound effects are somewhat better, I suppose. Loads quicker and takes less RAM. But I'm not an EV bigot, like Kryptauros. Override has more and better missions, if slightly less interesting ones. More ships, obviously, and more interesting ship designs (like Miranu ships). Better enhanced engine, obviously - the original EV engine is dead.
But overall, I prefer Override; mostly because I played it first. And EV crashes about half the times I quit.

I'm still playing them both. I guess if I had played one of them so many times that there were no longer any game paths I hadn't explored, I might prefer the other. But with all the plugs out there I think that will take a while (I guess I don't put in as much time playing as a lot of people here do--and I play slowly: I like to savor the experience).
SHIP GRAPHICS: |EV| but the UE/Voinian ships come close. WEAPON GRAPHICS: |EV| no challenge, the outf pics in EVO are too blocky. SOUND: |EV| no challenge, have you listened to EVO? GAMEPLAY: |EV| definitely, cause the galaxy is smaller and smoother on my comp. ENGINE: |EVO| definitely, does this need explaining? PERFORMANCE: |EV| definitely, cause it's smoother. PLUG-IN VARIETY: |EV| no challenge, goes without saying. MY FAVOURITE: |EV| cause EVO waits an hour before loading each system. However, I make my plug-in for EVO cause it has features I need. Or will have, at least.
But that's not to say i don't like EVO. I just like it less.

Publicity Stunt: Er...after finally getting Pale to d/l properly I guess there's no need for publicising MY plug-in... =(
Despite the ge of the game, it is still really good. We play it and ake plug ins for it because it is fun and we want to see how we can change it for the better without ruining the game from overprogramming. It is still a fun game.

I pretty much concur with PlanetPhil (see above)... Plus, the approach EV takes with naming its systems makes much more sense (to me, at least). Makes it far easier to remember names and positions than EVO's "Arwytyxzmw" approach.

------------------ Uh.. Yeah, I play EV...
The reason I like EV better than EVO is that EVO is so big, it's just annoying! You have to go across the entire galaxy just to do one mission. Another thing is that EVs graphics (in my opinion) are much better than EVO graphics. The graphics for EVO just don't look as cool. And making plug-ins for EVO is a HUGE task. Now, I'm not saying that I hate EVO, I just prefer EV over it.
I like EVO much better than EV. I have deleted EV from my hard drive, as it takes up precious space (don't worry, I have it backed up on CD). EV is old, and nothing changes. At least in EVO systems change (yes, I know there are plug-ins that change the systems, but I'm talking about the stock game), and I played EV when it came out. It is now, to me, boring. I like making plugs for EVO, as they are in a deeper plot, with many more missions. As for Krypatouras, shut the Fvck up, sh it face. You sound really stuppid saying things like 'this sucks' or 'this is dumb'. Many weapons in EVO are better than the ones in EV because of the VARIETY. How many weapons do you get in EV? Check in an editor to find out. Then look at EVO. Notice a difference? It's the same with systems, missions, ships, goverments, dudes, everything. It is just BETTER. I am cyrrently making an EV plug-in with OctoberFost, but I am only doing it because:
I like OctoberFost It's a tremendous idea It allows you to choose who you start as
I don't like EV, it's boring. Don't flame me. If you do, I really don't give a rat's ass. I'm not visiting this forum again. -(A very angry) Gav
Well, I have to say EV:O is a bit better than EV. My reasoning? Well, it goes something like this:
Graphics: Tie. I would say that graphicly the two games are about equil(sp) (unless you have MAGMA for EV:O =)) Gameplay: EV:O. The weapons and ships just seem a bit more balanced than in EV. Plot: EV:O. The plot in EV:O is, in my opinion, far richer and complex than EV. Sound: EV. The standard sound in EV:O does suck, unfortunately. Engine: EV:O. Duh. Plug-ins: EV. More varity than EV:O. The Winner: EV:O, by a nose.
------------------ I like people. They taste like chicken.
...Magma...
One reason I like EV better is because it's universe is more compelling. It's one you automatically feel at home in, but it's still big enough to find new things in, and small enough you can get to know it well (Especially us veterans....you know who you are... ;)). In EVO on the other hand, while initially it was exciting to start over in a new galaxy, it quickly becomes mind-numbing (The weapons and ships, for example, are so diverse you pretty much have to change them every time you enter a new zone) - it can take up to half an hour to complete a simple courier mission for pete's sake! Notice that the manjority of plug-ins for EVO simply create a new universe, while the ones for EV expand the existing one - it's more fun. What's more EV does feel like more time and effort went into it while Override feels slapdash. EV is a work of art you know, and the Reble Cruiser rocks!!

Actually, I'd say somewhat less thought and sophistication went into the EV scenario... Peter Cartwright in EVO really crafted a sophisticated story; it's just that it's a little too limiting. EV is smaller and more compact, but it really ends too quickly; the missions are a bit more simplistic. However, EV has enormous potential for expansion and is indeed more compelling.
