I would really like a confed cruiser for an escort but they seem impossible to capture - I;ve succesfully disabled 76 now without any success in capturing one - any tips to improve my chances?

What are you using as a ship?
before you board him, wait for your sheilds to go up, and damagehis armor as much as poissible. That might work.

Chances will go up if you buy a bigger ship. There is a very small chance to capture a Confed Cruiser with a shuttlecraft while there is a larger chance to capture it with a Kestral.

Urm, it's not the size, it's the crew.

Right, but I'm not sure if the crew of your escorts count also. But after capturing my first Cruiser, it was easier to get more
Personally, I would take just one Cruiser plus several Frigates and Kestrels. That'll make up a cool escort. The only drawback: You have to call them back permanently because you won't have many possibilities to fight otherwise.

Escorts count.
You are also forgetting a key factor, the tech level of the ships. I've done this, had a ship with a really high tech level, and a crew of only one, and could capture Confed Cruisers and Rebel Cruisers the max of 75% of the time. The problem of changing to the tech levels of a ship, you can't buy it anywhere unless you put it under the special tech field of all the planets you want to buy it at.

i have a alen cruser! if you don't beleve me you can come over my house and see it. but if you want one as a escort you need a plug in called instentship. it allows you to choose any ship in the game to use. i didn't use this to get the alen cruser. that another plug in
Thanks guys - but I have already tried all of the tips - my current ship is a highly customised confed cruiser - I have 5 rebel cruisers as escorts - and I am able to disable a cruiser without getting hardly a scratch - still no luck though.
Just keep trying. The higher the crew number of your ship, the higher the chance. Also, you could do what I did - at one point I had a Confed Cruiser with a fleet of Rebel Cruisers and I was receiving tribute from many planets. I then went and captured a small shipand used it as my own, and then I went to Earth or Stardock Alpha (I forgot since I haven't played in a VERY long time) and traded it in for another 'Fed Cruiser. Since I had a good amount of the galaxy under control, I managed to gain back my money quickly, and as I kept gaining Confed Cruisers I kept dominating planets and gaining more and more money. Eventually I had a fleet full of Confed Cruisers and the entire galaxy (including the Sol System and Ruby) under my control I did the same thing with Rebel Cruisers when I played for the Rebels, since it is so nice to have a fleet full of the same type of ship as yours when you have a really powerful one
