New to EV, need basic tips

I loaded a copy of EV from a web design book I got a month ago, and I love the game, it's just that I must be doing it wrong. I get killed really quickly, and I can't seem to able to stay alive long enough to save money for a good ship. I get whatever upgrades I can afford at Port Dread, but I always lose the ship somehow. I think the game would be really fun, and you all seem to do so well at it (flying capital ships and all), but I can't make money fast enough. I've found some good trade routes, but when I get an escort ship or two, I get swarmed but pirates! I can't leave fast enough to avoid 'em, and I can't fight that well yet (grr). Any hints on how to make more than 25 G's running Rush jobs? What's with the "Scamming Sol" armor biz? What should I outfit my Argosy or Light Freighter with to stay alive? Thanks in advance...

If you keep getting killed, you're probably ranging out too far. You won't get killed with recurring probability if you stay in and around the Confed core worlds.

Trade routes??? Oooh!

Buy Medical at Yumero, sell them at Spica, buy Metal there, sell it at Apollo, repeat until you have money coming out the wazoo!

Blah, escorts are a waste of money. In EV, I tend to be a 'loner' when it comes to missions; if my personal cargo bay is too small, the cargo takes up too much room.
Just keep running missions inside ConFed space to prevent death. When you accept missions, accept rush missions that are nearby, and then passenger missions that are a couple of jumps away from that one.
Another handy trick: At the mission computer, get all of the missions there that you are willing to do (passengers, cargo, rush, etc.). Then, accept a mission that you have no desire of accepting, and abort it. Go back to the mission comp. Voila, new missions! Now, you can accept some more missions, prefereably that are already along your route. If you don't see any, do this again. I've been able to make 100,000+ credit runs, simply by getting several rush missions, then a ton of passenger missions and a couple of cargo missions.
Well, I hope that helps/

Lose the Argosy, get a Rapier for about the same amount of cash. Its cargo bay is small but its shields regenerate very, very fast. Arm it as follows for best results:

1 torpedo launcher w/ about 25 torps

4 shield capacitators

1 shield regenerator

1 armplast armor

As many laser turrets as possible(I forgot the exact #)

You'll need to get a mass expansion or two, but don't worry, you won't need that much cargo room. Once your rapier is outfitted, disable a few pirate Argosys and Corvetts, which should be a breeze, board them, and take all their money. After getting a good combat rating (Above Average), go to Palshife or Clotho prime and get all the Rebel missions, you can complete all but the last one (the alien crusier mission) with a rapier. By the time you get to the alien crusier mission you should have enough cash for a kestrel. Hope this helps.

100 bottles of beer on the wall, 100 bottles of beer, take one down, pass it arround, 99 bottles of beer on the wall.....

So I should skip escorts altogether, eh? Noone seems to use them. Okay, they only made me a target anyways. I'll try that Yemuro-Spica-Apollo route. I don't usually go to Spica, 'cause that's one of the places I usually get killed, but if I'm going to be in a new Rapier, I bet I'll survive. Say, if I do have escorts, just fighters this time, how do I fire them when I'm done with 'em? I couldn't communicate with my fleet last time, to tell them to get lost. I had to get into a fight and stick around long enough for them to all get killed. Thanks again...

Escorts are good if you have a fast ship (lighning/defnder/manta/) and have two places nearby with a large trade discrepancy.

But they aren't much fun. To get rid of them, press option + select key to select the escort ship, then press Y to establish comm. Choose Release from Servitude and it's bye bye escort guy.

If your problem is that you are killed too often, then you could use the Forklift. You can get some money doing the rush missions. You should also get into UGE(they pay about 100,000 cr. for each succesful delivery). If you have a good ship, you can also disable and board pirates in the Darven system and take their money. Kestrels have about 450,000 cr. Do not disable military ships because besides making the government angry, they have no money. Once you have money, pick either the Confeds or the rebels and just start working for them.

I am also new to the game after a friend enlightened me. I found out after about 2 minutes that just blowing the sh*t out of everyone and every thing seemed to work really well. Just do basic trade routes like everyone before me has said but once you have enough for any type of fighter just go for that and make money by killing pirates and stealing what they have. Either that or kill little frieghters that seem to have lots of money.
