Help for a nub?

map help and neuromancer

On the map, after I hack some of the companies and such, the square indicating where they are change. Some are like a bolded box and some have a dotted outline around them. does this mean anything?

Also what does the neuromancer rating do? (does it affect anything?)

Here are the three types of boxes:
Plain Box - Normal Server
Box With Dotted Line - Server in which you have access to an account
Box With Solid Line - Server in which you have access to the admin account

The Neuromancer rating reflects whether you tend to be anti-individual or anti-corporation. In the early game it doesn't do much, but as you advance to bigger missions it changes. It can affect the missions you get.

Oh, and the "funnier" boxes give you more time to hack.

Plain Box: Normal amount
Dotted Box: Some more time
Bordered Box: Lots of time (vs plain box, that is 😉 )

One thing you'll find is there's rarely such a thing as "Lots of time" in Uplink. 😛

Not if you're a smarty-pants hacker like me. 😛 😉

True

That is, until you get the three most useful bits of software ever,
Listed here in order of uberness

MONITOR BYPASS (Oh yeah!)
Proxy Bypass
Firewall Bypass

The second two aren't supergood, they're just really handy to have.

With those three peices of software, plus a few basic ones, I can do just about anything!

Even if you have the monitor bypass, once you go into the admin account the trace still begins.
And you can't do "just about anything" with just those bypasses. To get to the really good missions you need LAN tools.

Yeah... once you get into LANs for the first time, though, everything goes downhill from there... the very first time you hack a LAN you'll probably get caught...

...deeehhhh...

What was I saying again???

Yes, if you try to force something.
I have never ever been caught hacking a LAN.

However you had a good point when you said
I needed the tools, I do.

But, once I hack a bank (by way of doing a
bank tracing mission), and go buy myself some
stuff, I can beat any misssion in the game.

So can anyone who is fairly good at it, with
all that stuff!

That's why I don't play much anymore.
