ok a while ago, I downloaded the Uplink demo. I played it and found it to be on the verge of a freakin awesome game! So I went to my parents to try and get a registration and showed them the game... stopped me right there... this game is blah blah blah.... morally wrong... blah blah blah and so on. I tired the, "its no as bad as some of the games i have..." thing but that didn't work. anyone got any advice?

Tell them exactly this: that this game will teach you how Script Kidde ( the true term for hackers) work and you therefor will be able to counter them in life, a very valuable skill. That worked on mine. And the new missions aper at those times because that is when the administrator posts them, like how once every two months the EVN add-ons page is updated.

Seriously, games don't turn people into criminals. They help ease tensions that would otherwise build up and cause serious psychological problems and anti-social tendencies. Why is it that psychologists suggest stressed-out people to go on vacations? They know that stress builds up and blows up for people who don't find ways to relax. If Uplink helps you relax and get away from reality for a while, that's much better than heavy drinking or drug use.
Plus, it's a puzzle game. It's much more mentally stimulating than a lot of other games out there.

Bleh. I learned a lot more about how to stop hackers from Uplink then getting the insentive to actually hack stuff. I would never hack stuff. The only hacking I would do is getting around some completely illogical bans set on certain IRC channels...

Your parents won't let you play Uplink? Phhh, and I bet you play games like Unreal and Doom... Even if games could cause you to do stuff (which they don't, unless you're seriously messed up to begin with), which is worse? Shooting people? Or hacking?

yeah well, the vilent first person shooters I play are violent, quake III, were obtained by my brothers. Now since they are on burned CD's I haven't asked HOW they got them :p, So my parents ignore those, as long as they arn't brought to their attention :p:P
So they don't know you play Unreal. Very clever... Also, tell them Uplink is an Ambrosia game. Most (no, all) of the stuff Ambrosia makes is 'clean'.

That's what I was going to say.
This game has absolutely nothing to do with real hacking, except a few things (remove tracks, bypass security, be quick, bounce your connection through several points). How many computer can you hack with such knowledge? None. Every security system are different, and aren't as easily bypassed.
Also, as LifeKnight said, all of ASW products are 'clean'. They (and the authorities too) would never have allowed a "hack teaching" game to exist. Never. Oh, and in case you don't know, ASW and their server are in the USA, which mean that they've to obey the laws, and could be very easily stopped if they were releasing such thing. It would be a complete absurdity for them to do something like a "hacker's guide".

More seriously, you're right. There's other way of finding the money needed for something (a job ?). And Uplink is not the most expensive thing.

Agreed, Uplink is about as far from real hacking as you can get.
Spaz, first off. NEVER EVER go with the "It's not as bad as some games I have..." I did that once and managed to get my so called worse game taken away (it was Metal Gear Solid One). Uplink is not going to teach anybody how to hack, its scales about 1 on the old realism level. My advice? Register Uplink via the mal using cash and request in the comment box that your code be sent to you over e-mail (it is automatically actually) and not through the mail. Your parents will never know. However, if you do follow through with this and your parents find out I am not to be held responsible for your death. What you need to do is build up a reputation for playing games like Return To Castle Wolfenstien so that when you say, "Mom I want to buy this hacking simulator." your mother thinks, "He actually wants a game with no guns, no blood, no violence? Oh I just new this glorious day would come! Infact I'll buy it for him."
