Look, some years ago, I showed a friend a program which, supposedly, can make photocopies of what you put on your computer screen. He beleived me. This doesn't mean that he's dumb, he just didn't have any idea of how computer work.
Maybe his parents just don't have the slightest idea of how computer security work. Look like it's the case.
Spazzy, if you're old enough, you could try to get a job and pay the game yourself. If you're not, find someone in your family who know enough about computers to explain your parents that Uplink is NOWHERE near real hacking.

Just be sure that when you tell them that is isn't anything like real hacking that they don't start to think you know much about real hacking. You may never touch another computer again in your house.
When I was able to get the game, my father, who worked with Macs (Go apple :D) for 20 years, told me that he trusted me I would never, ever hack. He told me because of his real knowledge that he could have been a very, deadly hacker. I promised that I would never apply anything from the game to my actual computer industry career.
But your dad isnt a computer geek, so I dont know what to say.

I had the same exact problem, my mom didn't want me using a hacking game made by "contraband"...luckily, my brother knew what real hacking was like (not like he ever did), and told her that it was not real in any way.
And as someone said, it is a stradegy game, develops your mind...hacking is just its theme, it is just the 21st century solitare.

Man Spazzy, that's bad. My parents don't want me playing games like Unreal Tournament and stuff, but they're fine with Uplink. Try telling them that Uplink is actually a GAME, not real hacking. Tell them that if it was anything like real hacking, then the government would freak out and wouldn't let Ambrosia publish it. If that doesn't work, exercise the hacking skills you have learned from Uplink and steal money from their bank accounts to pay for it in secret. And if they find out, either hack into the Social Security Database and make them "dead" or get them arrested.
