How To Give Yourself More Time

Accept two or three missions at once. As long as the missions are active, you can bounce data between the additional servers - the ones you'll hack into for your next missions - giving you extra time before you're traced.

Is it a bug, or a feature, BTW?

Also, you can add further servers by adding them from the InterNIC database. Simply click the + sign on the left of the name, and it will appear in your list and on the map. This is important to know when you get missions where you can only access a server by using another server from the same company. Usually that isn't already on your map, but you can find it and add it using the InterNIC Browse/Search feature and using the Filter and typing in part of the company name, such as "ARC".

Another hint is to open accounts at all banks that you can (legitimately - just go direct to the site and open an account) - it takes longer for a trace to follow you through servers where you have legitimate accounts. On the map screen, these are the ones with boxes around them.

Then route through those ones too.

Is it timed by the distance of the links, or how many different things you bounce from? LIke if you stretched across the screen, would that give you more time than one closer?

Good heavens, no. In the vast telecommunication networks of tomorrow, traces are measured between relay points, and that time depends on how well-hidden your signal is. So, the more 'legitimate' you are on any bounced machine, the longer it takes for a tracer to realize where the rogue signal is coming from.

A plain, normal bounce can be traced in as little as one or two seconds on a secure enough system. Dotted-boxes take closer to ten. Admin-class bounces are even longer. So, poking around in a bank through a whole slew of no-box bounces will have your trace tracker beeping like crazy and likely send you into a panic.

TheDistance is futile. And it's irrelevant as well--notice how the same company's systems are often scattered across the globe?

The best way to get time at the start is to sign up for an account at all the banks which can be found on internic(just do filter search "bank") , and sign up for the stock exchange.

Hack into the test machine again and you have permanent admin there, and viola! you should have about 10 user accounts, an admin and internic of corse.

This is enough for close to 100 seconds on most servers (and several hundred seconds on bad (goverment) ones)

Later on when much security is needed, take a chain of internal services machines to use as temporary admin bounces. VERY SECURE.

You also get some extra accounts on file servers if you do some missions.
