I got a mission to copy marketing details or something from one server to another. I connected to the mainframe and got to the file server I was supposed to copy off of, only to find that there was absolutely nothing on the server. So, I replied to the email, thinking that maybe through some fluke there actually weren't any files to copy, then I got a message saying they couldn't find the files on their server. I can't think of any ways this isn't a bug. Any ideas?

Maybe you previously deleted them on another mission.

How would I have done that? I never went on any random sprees of destruction.
It's also possible that an NPC hacker randomly nailed the target server first, too, but the odds of that happening are probably small, too. Is nothing 'scrollable' down? I know the file-directories don't have bars, but the buttons might reveal the target data. But if not, just abandon it and hope for better luck next time.

Yeah, an NPC got to the server first. If you want revenge, lock them all up in jail :p.

Oh. That's news. I didn't even know NPCs existed in the game. How can I find out who he is so I can ruin his life by erasing his credentials except "Certified idiot" and then get him arrested for messing up Agent Zortrium?

Well, if this happened recently, you might be able to accept a "trace this hacker who broke into our systems" mission from UISS; those missions are posted in response to newsworthy hacks and lower-profile hacks (yours' and others', but you can't trace yourself even if you wanted.)
But if you want to do things the brute-force way, go into each bank, find out every last account number, crack every account password, and find all the statements with the "monthly uplink fee" in them, and have them busted.
A surprising portion of the banking community are registered uplink agents :).
While you're at it, steal their cash. They won't need it in jail :).
Or you could find out who they are and fulfill a secret mission at the same time...

Actually, there are games that change on certain real-world dates (usually holidays). Uplink isn't one of them however (as far as I know).

Including, but not limited to, a few Ambrosia Easter eggs hidden in some of Andrew's titles like Maelstrom and Apeiron where the menu screens were gussied up to fit the holiday in question, and Dungeon Keepers 1 and 2 where certain text screens popped up or levels opened according to the lunar calendar. And Animal Crossing, too, but that's circumvented more easily and more often.
