The info when upgrading the gateway says the bandwidth is 2Gql. But when I check my hardware info (after getting it upgraded), it says 1Gql. Why?
Also, I would like to make my modem faster. I cannot get 4000, because I guess my gateway does not ave enough bandwidth. So I purchase the 2000, and I got it...

Each Gateway's bandwidth figure indicates the maximum speed modem it will support. You still have to buy the faster modem yourself (it will replace your existing one).

I kinda figured that out right after I posted this. I looked at the info again, but only three of the four given stats say Max. So, I assumed...
Yeah, now I've got the 2Gql.
What does Gql mean, anyway? I, for some reason, keep saying Gigaqwat whenever I see it...

It's supposed to mean Graphical Query Language, but I think they meant something else.

The Gq is for Gigaquads. I'm not sure what the l is (or perhaps it's a | ), but it's probably supposed to be something like per sec (/s).

I say "Gigaquadals." It seems strangely fitting.

Alright, I'll assume you're serious on this. A modem is the device that sends and recieves the data sent to and from your computer and the rest of the net. Although if this information has passed you by, then maybe Uplink isn't the game for you.

I say Gigaqualds :D. There are different types of modems, such as DSL modems(which is what i have), 56k modems, and a whole lot more

Not in Uplink, however. They are simply referred to as numbers. I have 640k+/s download/256k/s upload ADSL... /me hugs teh omg 1337 modem. That modem on a Mac makes uber speed!
I think he's referring to the modems in-game. Supposedly they increase your download/upload times when hacking. I don't see much of a difference however, and CPU speed seems to matter much more.

Ok, I'm really exposing my geek side here but, the whole "quad" thing simply refers to a quantity of memory. It (as far as I know anyway) originated on Star Trek as a way of describing a computer storage without actually giving a quantity that anyone would understand. That way things: 1. look more futuristic. and 2. can't be laughed at when the future date rolls closer and the actual standard memory quantities are far different. That being said, I'm sure no one really wanted to know that and even fellow geeks are gonna start laughing at me.
Yes. One thing, the (url="http://"http://guide.modlink.net/section2.php#2-5")guide on Modlink(/url) says that the Gateway Alpha IMemory has 1 gq/s capacity. It really has a 2 gq/s capacity. Icepick needs to update his guide.

I actually believe a quad is a real idea. A bit an ether or. Its 0 or 1. Its base 2. Its strung together in quantities so that it can denote a value that can have meaning assigned to it. 8 are strung together and are a byte, an item one of 256 possibilities, used to denote letters numbers and symbols (Ascii)
A quad would be like a byte only its one of 4 things. 0 or 0.33 or 0.66 or 1. A computer that is base 4, and similar in every other quality; clock, word size, ram, and transistors will be 4 times as powerful. Ram will hold 4 times as much. Processors will process 4 times as much. (a 64 bit processor like the g5 would be a 64 quad processor, it'd swallow words containing 4 times as much data each cycle) And in theory the power output from base 4 processors would be the same.
These are a real technology, they just dont work well. The idea bounced around a long time ago in the 286 age, but it was very problematic, but I do understand they did have working processors, but one of the things that killed them was nobody wanted to or could program for them.
