As for this topic, let's just chalk it up as a "general advice" topic and move on :). Anyone have any other useful tips for newbies?

I change my little quote thingy at the end every once in a while. I have a little text file with a bunch of them in it, and I just pick one whenever I get bored with the current one, or for some other reason decide to change it. If you go back to some of my older posts, you'll see a few others.

Anyway, is anyone going to actually post some more hints?

I'm not overly expert, but common sense dictates that you have to burn some bridges, especially when bank money is involved. -<grin>-

A couple of extra-novice tips that really help fresh starters, I guess:
-- Find all the banks on InterNIC. Highlight them so they're on the map. Give yourself an account in each. (possibly more, it increases the chance that someone asks you to transfer someone's money to one of your own accounts... a pleasant surprise.) This gives you 'legitimate user-status' on each bank IP, which makes for many-second bounces, making early hacks much less hectic. If more online time is needed, find some varied internal services machines, quickly crack the admin password and LOG OUT as soon as it is known. (Nice when you need another half-minute for a big big job, but a bit of a headache to always do.) The admin-access accounts take even longer to active trace.
-- Don't take every mission that you can early on, even if they're the only ones available. After the first tier of mission types, the missions tend to focus only on 'people-hurting' missions for a good while. If you want to be a corporate raider, don't take all the SS falsifying and college inflating missions; there will likely be fewer that will eventually come available.
-- Make sure you know your missions well enough so you don't have to abandon too many. Don't get rushed into deleting a file you actually needed to copy. If a 'Mission accomplished' message sent by you is rejected, the reply usually hints at what needs to get done. Also, don't immediately toss e-mail that you haven't read... apparently the future of the Internet is spamless.

So there. Basic hints that are likely everywhere else.
