The Downlink Challenge qualifier started last night. Are there any other fellow Mac users participating?
I've completed the qualifier and it was easy.
------------------ In the beginning, all was NULL, or perhaps (void*). -- (url="http://"http://vegastrike.sourceforge.net/")Vega Strike(/url) introduction One, Two, Three, (url="http://"http://source.bungie.org/")Pfh(/url)(url="http://"http://resurrection.bungie.org/")or(/url) (url="http://"http://www.idevgames.com/")iDevGames(/url)... do (url="http://"http://www.idevgames.com/content/contest.php?id=6")uDevGames(/url)?
yeah, easy easy. Now gotta wait another 2 days for the next part to start, sigh.

I'm in the challenge and I was just as glad that it was easy ... I went out of town on Sunday and just got back. I was afraid I wouldn't be able to finish in time.
I figure they should get progressively harder. This was just the qualifier after all. I wonder how much it will winnow out?

I bet it gets about a tenth of the people. Next one starts tomorrow, it's like a multiple choice test, right?

It's at (url="http://"http://downlink.org.uk/")Downlink(/url) but, since it's already started, you can't sign up anymore. But you can still do the challenges for the heck of it.

yeah. you won't be eligible for prizes, but the prizes don't look all =that= exciting anyway. I'm doing it for the fun of it.
I just spotted the following on the downlink site: "Once the whole thing is over, i'm planning on relaunching the challenge for those who couldn't be around to play it the first time." posted by Megadeath in the thread "Come on"
This is good news for the folks that didn't make the cutoff originally ... but it means we probably should be reticent about discussing solutions even after the challenge is past.

Qualifier is over, and a whopping 67% did not qualify!

I wonder how much of that was people who didn't try (either they forgot or were on vacation or something) and how much was people who couldn't figure it out.
It was one of those things that was either very easy or impossible, depending on if you had a clue how to begin or not.
I'm looking forward to the next part too.
I think i missed one on that test, how'd you guys do?

Which one? I think I got all of them.

There were one or two that I wasn't entirely positive about, and given the wording of the directions, I suspect there will be no "partial credit" for things that are almost right. (I'm thinking of the fill-in-the-blanks). But on the whole, I'm feeling pretty good about it.
Some of the questions seemed so easy that I stared at them suspiciously for a long time looking for a trick.

Oh now that is confidence <g>. It will be interesting to see if they post scores. It would be nice to know how we're stacking up against the competition.
I would also love to know how maccies are doing vs windozes, but I don't think there's any way to know for sure.

13, the riddle- still have no clue, when i took it i thought it'd be easier to understand once i had sobered up- no such luck. also the analogy - there are really multiple possible answers. also, the box a, box b thing had some self contradiction going on.

I found two answers for 13 that IMHO work equally well (they're synonyms). Hmm, yes, now that you mention it, I can find two answers to the analogy that would make sense in different ways. And the contradiction IS the point of 11... my head hurt before I arrived at an answer.
(However, if you think that jumble of logic is painful, read (url="http://"http://eblong.com/zarf/comp/logicpuz/puzzle-essay.html")this essay(/url)...)
On 11, they both say it's a, while one must be true and one must be false, because if they're both true then the one that says the other's false is lying, while if you consider them both false, the one that says the other's false is lying. Contradiction. I think I said B on that one. Too bad I can't go back and look at that one again now...
So...that page sinclair linked to doesn't say anything about what the challenge is. So what is it?

A bunch of... well, challenges? The qualifier was a basic "figure out the URL from this encoded file". Challenge 1 was a mini-quiz of 14-15 questions. 2 will be a large LAN. 3 will be a web-based game, and 4 will require you to find a link from the downlink web site.
(url="http://"http://madhouse.biz/downlink/phpbb2/viewtopic.php?t=38")Info from this Downlink forum topic(/url)
::downlink:: challenge scores are now available at (url="http://"http://madhouse.biz/downlink/dc/view.php")http://madhouse.biz/...ink/dc/view.php(/url)
I just realized I'm going to be away next week and will probably miss =something=. Erm. I wonder if I can borrow a laptop.

I'd like to see one too, but I haven't spotted one yet. You did the best of us posting here. I wonder if there are any other mac users in the challenge.
