I am eager to purchase the game, but... What is the difference between the CD boxed version from Introversion and the download version from Ambrosia? I thought I saw somewhere on the Ambrosia site a listing for a patch that said it only worked on the Ambrosia version? Is one supported with updates and the other not?
I ask because I really like the game and would like the boxed version. But then again, if the versions are somewhat different and one is not supported as much then I'll go with the supported version.
Also, does the boxed version come with a manual or anything else other than the CD? If not then maybe I'll lean towards the download version. Decisions, decisions.
I've also noticed that there is a PC version called Uplink: Hacker Elite. Does this have more than the Mac version?
Any information would be greatly appreciated.
Thanks!

I don't really know of anything different in the Ambrosia download and the Introversion CD versions, besides the way the game makes it to your hard drive...
And the Hacker Elite thing is just the PC Uplink CD that's sold in stores, as opposed to the download from Introversion's website. Previous to a couple months ago (or longer maybe...), you could only download it.

One difference is that the boxed version from introversion comes with an encrypted file that is book1 of the game bible. It also comes with the windows and unix version of the game on the cd.
On the other hand, I don't know if the patch from Ambrosia works on the Introversion game.
And the boxed version takes about a week to come, whereas the Ambrosia version can be downloaded. Registration on the downloaded Ambrosia version takes minutes.

The Introversion CD is the same as the Ambrosia download. Except that Ambrosia's is a mac adaptation of Introversions PC software. You have to get updates from Introversion if you buy their software and vice versa if you buy Ambrosia's. The only other difference has already been stated and that's that if you have a PC and you get Introversions then you get the 1st Game Bible. Cheers - Hope that helped
P.S. mac can't get the first Game Bible anywhere I've found yet but we can get No. 2 and therefore 3 via a seperate downloan from the ad-ons page at Ambrosia.

Wrong. You get the first Gamebible with the Introversion Uplink CD.

Introversion sells Uplink for Mac on CD. If you buy their Mac CD, it comes with book 1 of the game bible. It also comes with the Windows and Linux versions of the program. It does not come with the "extras" disc, but you can download that from here.
I have one.
I stand corrected. Twice. And I'm kicking myself for not getting the CD. Thanks.
Thanks everyone,
Looks like it's the CD for me. I appreciate everyone's input on this. This helped a lot.

Well I'm a total sucker. I bought Uplink =both= ways. I needed the instant gratification =and= the extra files. <grin>
I would also like to point out that the update from Ambrosia allows for the blissful ability to turn off the music but keep the sound effects. As far as I can tell, this is not available from the Introversion product. I love the Uplink music, but I want it to be about half as loud as the sound effects, so it doesn't distract me during intense moments. This way, I can listen to Uplink music (or anything else) on Itunes, at whatever volume I want, while playing the game. This was, for me, a major improvement.
