Gateway construction questions

Greetings assundry.
I have found quite a few how-to's for building a gateway with...the other operating system. I have noticed their is very little reliable information for MacOS.

Would someone care to enlighten me what the differences are in constructing one on macOS, I am not interested in making the crack machine 5000 (thank you AWOL). just a small modest one, that mimics what the original Virtuanet one does

Also if their is a good macos centered web tutorial link that would be grad as well.

I think it's the same, since PC-made Gateways work on the Mac Uplink. Unfortunately, I don't think there's a way to implement the uncatchable modem. Modlink.net has a nice guide: (url="http://"http://modlink.net/guides.php")http://modlink.net/guides.php(/url)

Incidentally, I'm making a five-ish pack of Gateways that are progressively more powerful than the Trinity, just to have Gateways that are exactly how I want them, built by me. I might submit them to Modlink.

Version 4.0 of my AWOL gateway guide will work for making a gateway on the MAC. The only thing you would have to do differently as far as I know is find a paint or image program that works on the MAC that can make a TIF file and a program that make a normal txt file. I don't have a MAC so I can't recomend any programs to you.

The information in my guide is about as reliable as you can get. Trust me, I wrote 4.0 so both windows and MAC users could make their own gateway.

Anyone have a good formula (or suggestions) for figuring out Gateway costs?

I'm making a gateway maker program. It's in beta (closed) now, there are a few bugs to iron out...

My method for picking a price? Uh well I don't really have one. But you could try writing down different prices on a bunch of little postit notes, put them on a wall, and then throw darts at them.

On the subject of gateways: how do I install a gateway?

Just download and unzip the file to your gateway directory. With any AWOL gateway it creates the correct folders and puts stuff in the right place for it to work. But from what I understand when it comes to the MAC, you can only install custom gateways with a registered version.

------------------

I've got the full version, but I still don't get it. I unziped it and it had 2 folders plus the readme. Graphics and gateways. where do I put them, and while I'm at this how do install new theams?

I just told you. Most gateways are self installing. Once the file is unziped to the Uplink dir then just have to buy the new gateway in the game. You don't need to move anything. And it should work the same way for themse. The proper folders are automatically created and the correct objects are put where they need to be for things to work.

------------------

I've done every thing you have sugjested already. I put it in and nothing happenes. Maby you are talking about the PC version of Uplink.

A difference I've noticed is that in the gateway construction guide, you (PunisherBass) said that you'll need to create a "data" (all lowercase) directory if it doesn't already exist. The problem is that a directory called "Data" already exists, and if you were to try and create a directory called "data" it wouldn't work. This could be causing problems for some. Just my 2 cents.

Ok, I got the themes to work, but the gateways are still........... odd.

Re: Punisher.

Initial indications seems their are a few difereces you may want to add to your guid for Mac OSX people:
It seems that i rev 1.3.2 iether the gateway_blah.txt (although the programer in me wants to know why on earth they didn't make it .HTML as it's genuinely OS agnotstic) or tff files may need to be redshir format or compressed some how. proof even after a pico write wich generates a genuine ASCII file the uplink still fails to assimulate the new gateway.

Calibur and assundery have already noted some of the other differences

A minor side note part of me wonders why on earth it is required to note the pixel location of major components ?

My theory is that so when you purchase more hardware (processors, RAM, etc.) they are drawn in the correct place on the gateway diagram.

If that's not the reason then the world is insane.

So, I guess I can just make up some reasonable costs, since there doesn't appear to be any formula. but the clincher is: What's the approximate plausible maximum number of credits you can get without hacking your user files? I haven't gone into the plotline yet, I've hacked 4 out of 8 banks and stolen the money out of the 4 accounts with upwards of several hundred thousand credits, I've done all nonstoryline missions that have come up, (it's April 1st), and I have just under 4 million credits and a maxed-out Trinity . . . so my guess is about 8 million.

Ok, now the gateways are working. Why didn't anyone tell me you had to have a data folder in side the data folder? Anyway, anouther qustion, does any here have the gateway builder that can be downloaded at modlink.net? If so, I need some help.
