Criminal Database

Hey, I've got a question. I've noticed a few Uplink agents getting arrested, and since they are fellow agents, I decided that for kicks I would see if I could break them out. So I go to the Criminal Database, get the equipment I need, and hack into it. Finding the agents records, I see there's a "Clear record" button, so I click that, then leave. I've speeded up time for a day or so, but so far nothing has happened. Does the clear record have any effect after they are arrested? And if not, is there any other way to get someone out of jail?

The first time I played Uplink I got a record for "Unautorised access" or something like that. Than I want to take some missions but they doesn't want me any more because of that record.

You get a criminal record when you get caught, but only if the owner of the terminal you hacked decides to punish you, or press charges. Sometimes they simply give you a warning.

Wraith: I'd imagine that you can't actually free someone from jail. I believe that the criminal database affects merely whether someone is incarcerated, and once they're incarcerated, there is no way to get them released (at least through the criminal database).

That is difficult. The "easy" solution is to hack into the criminal records database, and change your own record. That will be extremelly difficult, I imagine, although I have not yet tried it. Most of the precautions that are suggested in the hacking banks threads will be useful.

In general, to avoid this happening in the future you need to disconnect before the trace is completed. The trace tracker program will help with that.

I am very new to this so haven't seen this database yet, but...

...But can you go into the criminal records and change their incarceration details. Such as what they are in for. How long till release etc. Maybe you can have them released earlier than would be normally.

Yes. Yes. No. No. In that order.

You can only get people arrested, not released. A shame, since that would open up for a whole new bunch of missions, like "Free our associate", "Our associate has been framed" etc.

the criminal database is a sure way to generate money. been playing the game since it's release and have been making tonnes of money just by getting people arrested. just put in two convictions and then 'broken parole' and authorize the arrest. sure way to kill off people. but i noticed that in the end you are stuck with missions that deal with destroying people....pretty sad...anyway, i'm morally insane...

Well, for starters, get it on your map by looking it up or getting a mission for it. I find it easier to get in without the best equipment by activating all the sites I know of and clicking on all of them on the map, starting with InterNIC and ending with the GCD. Oh yes, and don't forget to stop any passive traces by deleting the "Password accepted" and "So and so routed to so and so" in InterNIC.

Actually...

Hack a bank so you're rich. Get the HUD_Connection Analysis upgrade, and the HUD_Trace Tracker thingy. Then just get all the bypasses level 5. Break all the passwords (no trace will start) and enjoy your long, luxurious time modifying idiotic people's criminal records It would be interesting to arrest every (well, almost every) Uplink agent and see what happens. Is there a finite number of people in that database? What if you got them all arrested? Hehe

Ok I've been wondering about this. I currently have all the sofware ie-proxy, firewall, monitor bypasses and the hud upgrade that allows you to do it. (Essentially I have everything that you can have to hack into anything except a LAN system.)

So when I hack the database first I put the bypassers on both the monitor and proxy. Then I go to elliptic curve and crack it. Then I go to the password screen and try hacking it with the dictionary hacker and password breaker

(My cpu has 400 speed so it goes fast) (I only use the dictionary hacker on the off chance that it might be an actual word)
After the password is found I hit prceed and only then do I start getting traced.
This isn't a problem as I have about 2 minutes, but I'm curious that why even with the bypasses on do I start getting traced as soon as I hit proceed from the password screen.

Hi,
I wondered too what happened when you arrested all the other agents...

So i hacked Uplink internal services
got that "special program" and downloaded the other data files, needed for that program

then hacked criminal database several times and got the other names of the agents and got them arrested...

A lot of news messages appeared 3 hours later, etc. etc. all agents have been arrested now

When i check my rank, it's still 22nd (i'm unregistered for now) but the top 10 agents all say "in jail"

it works
but i don't get the point, nothing else happens

and for those data files, is there a meaning about the number 4 file not existing?????? it goes 0-3 and 5-9

Anyway
is there any other meaning about that "special program"???
some other method of using the data you obtain from it????

The monitor bypass simply stops the monitor from detecting an abnormal number of text entries in rapid succession (ie, password/dictionary cracker). Once you are in, I assume an admin begins the trace or something (perhaps some program or script detects the presence of a Gateway or something).
