I have a lot of missions asking me to get info on people's bank accounts, but when I try to use Password Breaker on the Log-in screen, it just types "admin" in the name thing and closes, leaving me without a password. Traces don't start up or anything. Is this supposed to happen, and if so what can I do to get past this?

type in the account number for the person, and then after that run the password breaker.

No, the admin login for the bank is through a different area. When actually hacking a bank you want to use the account number as the login.

I love hacking banks. I don't know if someone figured it out but I'll give you few tricks. First, connect to InterNIC and select a corporation. Then add that corporation's two links (Public Server and Bank). After that, connect to their public server (you don't need to route around the world) and get the admin's telephone number. Buy an voice analyser software. Run the analyser and call the guy. Voice analyser will record his/her voice. DON'T CLOSE THE ANALYSER. Then, buy a Decypher software(high version). Enter InterNIC and add a hundred of links. Start routing from the Uplink Test Machine and around the world. At last, click the bank. Connect and enter the administration section. You don't have much time so you need to be fast and a good CPU. Enter password section and use password breaker on it. Then enter voice section and use voice analyser on it(playback). Enter into elliptic curve section and use decypher on it. If you don't have time, disconnect and connect again. Enter account numbers section and grab a piece of paper and pencil. Write down all passwords and account nos. Then disconnect. Route around the world again. Enter Account Management section. Enter account number and password. Increase loans until you reach its limit. Transfer money to your account. Do this until you finish every money on the people Hack into the Test Machine and delete logs. They won't be able to catch you anymore. Here is a tip: You can segment your hacking process. Hack the password, disconnect, connect again and hack the voice. Accesses will always be granted UNTIL you get into the account numbers and passwords list section. I don't know if another way exists, but this is fun to do. It's like real hacking.
Dont forget to delete statements. Also, forget the hundred links, just have a monitor bypass.

I figure the many links help to slow down the passive trace. I hear that linking through government servers is particularly good for this. With banks, the passive trace can be very very fast, so I figure I need all the help I can get.

A hundred links will take you a long time to set up. I just use the government servers and 4 banks, and still have some time to spare.

Yeah, that's true, though you could save it once you had it (assuming you ever managed to get the save feature on the map to work, which I haven't <g> ).
I don't really use a hundred links, more like 20. Once I got monitor bypass, I got admin passwords for 10-12 systems, and use those routinely too.
Yes, but when you save it, sometimes you need to use one of the links you saved bouncing through. Also, you have to re-save whenever you quit and reload.
It doesnt work for you? Any idea why?

You need to reload the tracer and motion detector too.
I don't know why it doesn't work for me. It says that it saves something (under other text, but that is a known bug), but then when I click "load" nothing happens. It's not a big deal, though, I like to vary my route anyway. (Internic, then the test server, then randomly through systems I have admin access to, then randomly through systems I have accounts in, then through any remaining government servers and anything miscellaneous, then through a "friendly" link, if necessary, then the target.)
I usually have saved "Internic, Test, banks", which is inconvinient when I am hacking a bank.

There now, see? If you saved the internal services machines instead, you could more easily hack the banks, especially if you have admin access to the internal services machines.
Of course, if you get a job to take down an internal services machine, you'll need to reroute anyway. Then again, once you trash one of those once or twice, it seems like most of the kill-a-computer jobs are for mainframes anyway.

the is another much less text and simpler guide to doing this:
(taken from the "The Ultimate Uplink Guide") Before you start, you will need to know an Account Number at the bank you want to hack, your Uplink Bank Account number, and the IP of Uplink International Bank.
1. Connect to the bank, with InterNIC as your first bounce, and bypass the monitor and proxy with Level 5 Bypassers. 2. Break into the account you want to steal from, using the account number as the user name, and the password breaker to get the password. You should not have a trace on you because of the monitor bypass. 3. Enter the transfer screen and transfer money to your Uplink bank account 4. Delete the Statement logs from the account you stole from saying you just transferred money. 5. Connect to Uplink bank, log into your account, bypass monitor and proxy then delete the log saying you received money 6. Connect to InterNIC and delete the bounce logs. 7. Start Spending. You don't have to wait before you can spend the money you just stole.
Note that once you have a password of an account, you don't need the monitor bypass to access it, the bank doesn't trace normal account entries.
O Crap.
I hacked into AM-Core, did some mission, and then disconnected because I had like 5 seconds left... and I couldn't find the logs to delete. Is this ok, or am I screwed unless I act quick?
Originally posted by Sir David: **O Crap.
What? You mean there acctually werent logs? Just delete whatever is there.
You're basically screwed. If it's a minor offense, you may get off light though.
