Uplink oddities...

There are a few things in Uplink that are odd, and that most likely wouldn't happen in the real world. For example:

There are no women in the Academic Database, Social Security Database, or as company admins.

Both of the databases are organized alphabetically by first name.

One of the voices that you hear when you call people says "Come on! Hello!" when he first picks up.

Your IP is 127.0.0.1, and somehow other people are able to trace it to you only.

Also, hard drives don't exist. Memory seems to work as a hard drive, and the CPU seems to be the replacement for memory.

Would a government database like InterNIC really have no monitor or anything? Odd.

Something that very likely is a bug. I got a mission from some company to destroy their central mainframe.

I'd imagine that InterNIC was created with the fact that people need a place where they can easily hack into to acsess logs. I did not understand what else you said about cpus and memory there.

Ummmm, IP addresses are decimal in uplink - each part goes up to 999 instead of 255 as it should if they were trying for realistic IP addresses. It's not fake IPv6 either, as that would be 8 lots of 0-4 hex digits.

Not to mention that in the future, only 7 yrs away, there will be no more separation of primary and secondary storage, and file systems will (apparantly) cease to exist in favour of 70's style manual block allocation. And secure challange/response systems will be replaced with brute-forcable password systems, and Elliptic curve cryptography will mean something else entirely. And the only purpose of a terminal on major server operating systems will be to delete files & run programs, and the FHS will be replaced with a one-level directory structure. And an IRC client will cost you 5 thousand credits!
</nitpick>

Anyway, there is very little in uplink that closely resembles reality - it really is just a game. 🙂

Cheers,
B!nej

I imagine a totaly different future, and ill make it that way too.

I think it's ironic that a "good" hacker is one that destroys computers, but in the end it is the bad guys that try to destroy all the computers.

None of the admins ever sound half-asleep, no matter what time you call them.

With many of those, I have to agree. But the fact that there aren't any women in the criminal database, academic records, and social security system has been discussed. When Ambrosia made Uplink, they had a set of names randomly paired with a set of pictures. If you start a new user, you'll probably find that "Joe Shmoe" has a different picture than with your other user. If they had female pictures and names added, you'd probably result with many male names paired with female pictures, and vice versa. Ambrosia probably left out female side to make things simpilier and easier for them. They may add that in any sequels that they put out.

Remember, this is a completely different internet than the one you people are on right now. What you know about IPs on this one doesn't necessarily match up with the future one. If you've read some of the backstory (it's somewhere, I don't remember where), you'll see.

If it's just a game, and life is all a game, then isn't the game real life?

Remember that Ambrosia did not "make" this game in any way, shape or form. The game was developed by Introversion Software, ported by Contraband Entertainment, and is now published in shareware by Ambrosia.

It is actually not too difficult a matter to integrate female names/pictures, but that's just how it turned out.

On a tangent, the name pairs are two lists- first and last names are seperated.

And obviously the one for first names isn't a very long list (and is very Anglo-Centric). (I've seen downloadable expansions for the name lists).

OK, so maybe I didn't get a few of the details right, but you get the point I was tryin' to make.
