... to get money from robbing banks? I got one of the "investigate loan" missons, so I hacked a bank to get his password. While inside, I used the pause feature to copy down login/pass of all users in the bank. Once the mission was completed, I logged back in and entered all the accounts (this does not cause a trace, because I had the passwords), checked the balance and recent transactions. One of the accounts had a balance of 800'000. I disabled the proxy, transfered the money to my own account in the same bank and deleted the logs. I then moved the money on to my uplink account, deleted the logs again and logged of with some 30s to spare.
My point is - I got some 6000 for the original hacking mission, the one where I shoudl check the loan. Most accounts had more in them than that, and that hack was so much easier. Even if I hadn't found the 800'000 - I assume this was luck - I woudl have netted a lot of cash from my little bank robbery. I haven't even registered yet, and I already have more cash than it seems I'll ever need.

If all you want is money, you do not have to rob a bank, or earn it. If you are using os9 you can get a program called "Pandora's Box" , or for osx you can get a program called "Game Cheater"...for both you basically just search for your amount of money, and change it to whatever you want...

Well, most people consider bank hacks really wreck the fun of the game. The point is to see if you can hack the bank, then just take a small amount of money as a reward.

That REALLY takes the fun out of the game.

Exactly what I do, plus, robbing banks raises your rating, and gets better missions available.

I know. I dont do it, but the only reason he is hacking banks is to get money, so might as well make his experience easier for him.
Only ever robbed that one, and that was just to see if I could. It seems I could. I feel a bit like when I was playing SimAnt back in the days and figured out that if you put a little rock on top of the other ants' nest, they wouldn't remove it and the queen woudl starve.

Hehehe. That was always fun to do. But back to Uplink...
Hacking banks really increases your rating. There are plenty of players that will only transfer small amounts for the rating boost, and not the money. That's really the purist way to do things, the other extreme being Game Cheater or Pandora's Box. I like to take the middle ground in a lot of my games. Hack a bank for a big pay-off, but only do it once. Once you've bought a lot of software and gateway parts, you'll see it doesn't last all that long.

Does hacking a bank for 500 credits have the same effect on your rating as for a million?

I believe so. The fact that you can hack a bank is more impressive than the amount you can steal.

Yep, that seems a good compromise. If I'm going to steal money, it may as well be for a big amount, but doing it too often is like shooting fish in a barrel. If I were desparate for money, I might do it, but otherwise it's unchallenging, so why bother?
OTOH, once in awhile some wealthy person apparently donates money to one of my spare bank accounts. When they do so, I keep the money (and I'll even delete the logs), and transfer it to my uplink account. Who am I to complain if someone wants to send me money gratis?
