You have to trigger the self-destruct manually. Just keep an eye on the motion sensor and when (if) it turns red, press the destruct button in the self-destruct window.

Question: the help section of the uplink public access server mentions security features such as laser trip wires, which are not listed in the security section of the hardware shop. Are these things that become available at some later point in the game?

If you have a computer with only one security system availible does it do you any good to even get one. THe only one that would actually stop the people from killing my account would be a self destruct device, but how will I know if someones coming so that I can trigger it without a camera or motion detector?
