I've just taken a job tracing down a hacker (this is my second time doing a trace job, so I know what I'm doing somewhat). The weird thing is, the company that employed me didn't give me access into their hacked system, so I had to hack in myself. The hack on their system supposedly occurred at 16:00, 8-4-2010. But when I got to their logs, I only found three logs on 8-4-2010, and they were all around 03:00 -- nowhere near 16:00. So, I don't really know what to do. I ran the log undeleter on all of them, but they all stayed unchanged. Ideas?

Are you sure you checked the exact system they said was hacked? I don't often do trace a hacker missions, because they take very long time.

Yes. When I was on the server, I checked the IP address of the server I was connected to, and it matched number-for-number the IP address listed in the mission description I was sent.
You might be too late. If you don't complete the misson (or accept it) right away, the hacker you're tracing will go back and delete their logs.

Ah. That would be it, then -- this is a somewhat old mission. What's the best thing to do now? Will abandoning the mission hurt my ranking any?
Unfortunatly yes it will. You could always try tracing one of those backwards, as the times the company report to you are when they first NOTICED the effects of the hack.

This is all normal -- I have to trace hacks where the times were off by 24 hours. You are looking for a triplet of Connection Established, File Accessed, and Disconnection. This gives you the true time of the hack. Then you have to trace back through the bounce path of 3-5 servers. The log undeleter you use when you don't find a time / relay match.
Does abandoning missions have any permanent effect on you? I know it lowers your uplink rating, but that can be repaired. Does it do anything like make companies not like you, etc etc?

Yeah, it realy doesn't matter how old a mission is. The hacker may delete or alter a few logs, but it shouldn't stop you as long as you have a log undeleter.

Unless after a while they go back with Log Deleted version 4

I thought you could use log-undeleter on ANY version of log-deleter. Higher versions of deleter are just a lot harder to detect. I've never had any problem doing old trace hacker missions, even when they just sit in my inbox for months before I do them.
Version 4.0 claimed to be undetectable...
