a serial, a file that authenticates? What is it actually?

You'll get a code that will unlock the game, easy...
ahhhh. Cool. Now here's another question. Someone said Uplink "phones home". Is this true? I can't STAND software that does this. I purchased my copy of Office for 199 with my machine and first thing I did was block those ports on my firwall.

Well, that's not a question... What do you mean by "phones home"?

The registration Application will accept the code that you got up until 30 days after the code was generated. After that if you enter the code the registration Application will contact Ambrosia's server to check the code against a list of pirate codes and then if it does not match any of them, give you a valid code. So, as long as you register the program within 30 days of receiving the code, your computer won't be contacting anyone. If it is after that 30 days it will be a very short connection to receive a valid code.

So how does it know if the original code is vaild? Does it have an authentication routine?
Just a few clarifications...
The package you download from our website contains the complete game. Certain features and levels are initially disabled, but you can play the game to decide whether you want to register. Upon registration, we will generate you a 12-digit license code that will unlock the rest of the features of the game.
Once you receive your license code, you have 4 weeks to enter it into the Register Uplink program and unlock the game. Once the code is accepted, you don't need to enter it again unless you re-install your system from scratch or install the game on another machine.
If you don't enter your code within the 4 week grace period (you get hit by a bus and are stuck in traction for a month), or if you want to install the software on another machine at a later date, you will need an updated code to unlock the software. You can contact us at (url="http://"http://mailto:lostcodes@ambrosiasw.com")lostcodes@ambrosiasw.com(/url) or by phone to request a new one at no charge. Alternately, you can simply enter the expired code into the Register program and you will be prompted to renew it automatically over the Internet -- 5 seconds and 2 clicks, and you are good to go.
At no time does Uplink or the Register program contact our servers without your explicit consent, and the only information exchanged is enough to generate you a new code.
If you have more questions regarding our registration system, please contact us directly at (url="http://"http://mailto:help@ambrosiasw.com")help@ambrosiasw.com(/url)
