Release date for the Ambrosia version and other questions

Hi Guys,

I've been fascinated with the idea of uplink when I first read about it on the ambrosia website and who I haven't been disappointed! πŸ™‚ I've played the demo over and over and still have some questions/comments.....

1. I always get cut off when I take any mission with the rank of confident or higher and finish it. I've been reading some posts where players change the criminal record of people. Doesn't this automatically give you a higher ranking and automatically kick you out of the demo? Same thing if you hack into a bank successfully, right?

2. I've been following the advice of other posters and take a couple of confident missions and then abandon them, this prolongs the demo indefinitely (thanks for the tip πŸ™‚ ). An addition to that tip. If you take numerous missions of confident, have them pay you half in advance AND then abandon the mission you screw the companies even more (more money to spend) plus I haven't gotten any negative impact other than being kicked back to beginner.

3. Somewhere I read that the Ambrosia version would be a joint release on the 26th with IV. As (I think) somebody pointed out, couldn't Ambrosia publish it earlier since they don't have to duplicate the software? To add to that theory in IV's apology to Ambrosia they state:

"If you'd like to buy Mac Uplink this way you should keep your eye on this page over on Ambrosia's site - they should be up and running in no time.
Introversion will be handling all packaged copies of the game (worldwide, not just in the UK as we previously stated). If you'd like to buy the game the old-fashioned way, you'll be able to do just that from this site from the 26th May onwards. We can ship to most places in the world within a week or so."

Is it just my wishful think or could we be getting the shareware version in the next couple of days?

(If somebody from Ambrosia is reading this post PLEASE we're ALL desperately waiting, as you can tell from these boards!)

I think that's all the blab from me. Sorry if I missed some post that answered my questions...

Look forward to keeping in touch with fellow hackers while we try to battle the evil corporations... (How about a Microsoft server to hack with bill gates personal funds transferred into our accounts?? :-)!

Bye for now,

Phillyman

Not likely. It hasn't even been given final candidate status yet. There are apparently still some bugs to work out.

The game does rock. I played for about 2 hours last night using the abandon method. What I found out after doing it about 20 times, the game seems to catch on. When I tried to abandon after that - the game just quit. At first I thought it was a quirk...but I went back in, loaded my char, and tried abandoning a mission - it quit again. Of course as soon as I started to do any of the missions the demo ended.

Although within those two hours I was able to get some sweet hardeware and software. Can't wait for the retail version. I agree that it would be cool if it came sooner - but I can play with a demo for two weeks.

------------------

Yeah...I was about to hack into the SSN database...and it ate me. My screen went black, and I, unknowing...well, did not know what was happening. They had already started a trace on me, I had quit...fast. I thought I would be able to start back up and start again. Nice try. Great game though, can't wait till it comes out.

Not terribly appealing to a person who watches the game, but to the player...what a feast.

Thanks everybody to greeting me to the board.

After reading Kidglove's post I'm sorry to say that I have to agree that Uplink won't be released in the next couple of days (@kidglove: Thanks for that observation, I hadn't checked the Ambrosia progress log)

Roigat and Mr Somebody: I agree the game is going to be fun and the demo will tide us over but we can still keep our fingers crossed for an earlier release (Nobody bash me, I still want to dream..)

Also you guys state that your game seems to quit (i.e. black screen) that might be an error of the game. Some other posts suggest that your user file might be corrupted. The demo has worked more or less solidly for me (some crashes) but I could always restart and continue. The "official" ending of the demo is a message from Uplink informing you that your rating is too high and that the demo is over.

As I've said in several other topics, the shareware version does not terminate your account at that rating, it just prevents you from increasing further or getting many of the missions available. But of course, by the time the shareware version is out, you'll be able to register and it won't be such an issue. πŸ™‚

If anyone feels I have too many links in my sig, please make a website about it and I will link to it in my sig.

I'm actually going to play the shareware version for quite some time. I only have $40 right now and don't want to spend most of it, so I'll wait till I've got $80... The game probably won't be out before then, though. πŸ™‚

Really, really fun game. Looking forward to the full, Ambrosia-polished version.

One thing I'm puzzled over.... (is this a bug?) When attempting to hack into, say, the Academic Database to edit a record, no matter what name you type in, the database flashes through every single entry. This can't be right, can it? I can't imagine trying to click "Commit" just at the time your guy flashes by... At least that's what I've tried to do, with very little success.

Anyone encounter this behavior? Or is there some other solution I'm missing?

Thanks...

Note. The above occurs on an iBook 500 (384MB RAM) running 10.2.6.

Make sure you have the spelling of the name exactly right. As far as I've been able to tell, partial names do not match.

Atleast for me, it goes through a lot of entries, and then stop at the right one. It's meant to look cool, I guess... I've never had it not stop on me, but I can imagine reasons why it wouldnt.. As suggested above, you should probably make sure the name you search for is speled πŸ˜‰ correctly.

How strange.

I recall spelling the name very carefully (case-sensitive, with spaces -- exactly as spelled in the E-mail), over a dozen times, with no luck. It goes right past the person I'm trying to edit, through the entire database, and ends on.... me.

I'll give it another try when I'm home, register to these boards, and provide a screenshot. Thanks for the help...

Probably not. Most of the data is deleted when Uplink "terminates your account" for either the demo or an arrest.

Sigh. Me again (having looked up my AmbrosiaSW registration).

Still no luck. Despite spelling the name (url="http://"http://www.look-designs.com/extras/uplink.gif")exactly(/url), it then flips right past the person's name in the database, and I'm not able to edit it.

Why am I the only one experiencing this bug? Very weird. I've tried deleting the demo and re-downloading and starting with a new agent --- same thing happens.
