The Mac demo of Uplink has been released! Now we can finally get our fix before it comes out later in the month The press release is as follows:
"The Mac demo of Uplink is now ready! Go to our website to download it at (url="http://"http://www.introversion.co.uk")www.introversion.co.uk(/url).
We're very happy to announce that the Mac port of Uplink is finally finished, and will be available to buy vey soon. In fact, we're so confident we're going to name a release date of the 26th May (2003 hehe). This Mac port does seem to have taken forever, but it's been worth it and we are very happy that it's finally ready for release.
The Mac port was done by Contraband Entertainment, and will be published in the USA by Ambrosia. Introversion Software will be handling publication in the UK.
Have fun! Introversion Software"
You can also go to the demo page directly at (url="http://"http://www.introversion.co.uk/uplink/demo_mac.html")http://www.introvers...k/demo_mac.html(/url) (ps. AndyB posted similar information in another topic but I figured this deserved its own topic)

I liked it. I've played through the demo version a couple of times now, and I think it is a good game. It's quite cool. I'll definately try going through the demo again a couple of times.
I do think the demo was a bit too short. Not that that is likely to change. It really didn't give me much of a challenge and I gained too high a rank too quickly for me to try more than 3 or 4 missions. :frown:

The demo is way too short.
Also, I'm wondering if it will still be shareware like most of Ambrosia's published stuff. The fact that ther is a demo, not a shareware version makes me worried that I may have to go to a store to buy it and not just pay online for a Serial.
Also, is there a certain place to report any bugs found in the beta?
What struck Entarus and I is that Ambrosia is not mentioned anywhere (at least that I noticed) in the game. Doesn't it seem a little odd that they, the publisher, would not release the demo themselves and at least put their logo on it? Perhaps it is part of the port deal...

The demo version is for the UK only. You people aren't supposed to get it unless you're from there :p. You may have noticed that there wasn't an Ambrosia icon at start-up. Ambrosia is taking care of the rest, so there definitely will be a shareware version (with their logo), just like all the other Ambrosia games you know and love.
As for being too short, I don't think that will change. Just think, the less in the demo/shareware, the more to discover in the full game. There is SO much more in the full game, so don't worry.
As for bugs, if you find any, report them as you would report any bug, or perhaps post them here and it will get noticed pretty quickly by the beta team.
Just a hint on the demo: you can literally do whatever you want, as it's a completely open-ended game. There's plenty more to do/see than just the missions.

Alright: I'll take mrxak's suggestion and post the bugs i've found here.
1. In the description for the HUD_IRC-client upgrade, the last few words are cut off.
2. When you enter an incorrect password and/or username at the login box at the very start, it flashes one of the gateway connection screens (giant eye, blue picture, etc.) and returns to the login box. it might be better to replace it with just a message saying incorrect login.
3. I saved a set of jumps between servers in the world map. it was about 30 or so, in a row. Whenever i loaded it, the names of all the servers would move up and down constantly. Very weird. I have yet to see if the same thing occurs on another user or not.
Andrew
Meh, don't worry about the 3rd problem. It happens to me too, and I have the full windows game. And it only happens sometimes. Or does yours happen all the time?

On my iMac 500 MHz 256 RAM, the game refuses to run in full screen mode. When I first ran it, full screen was checked. I unchecked it and then checked it again and restarted but it didn't have any effect.

This is because the text box is too small. I noticed this with the highest version of some other peice of software, too - if you change the resolution, the textbox will be bigger and you will be able to see what it says. There should really be a scroll bar on this text box, imho.

I noticed this too - it appears to be because you're loading a set of links that pass through a computer that is supposed to be hidden from the map view. Just go to the links and enable it (click to the right of the link so that an icon with two rings appear) to stop this from happening.
I also found the graphics a bit sluggish. I was constantly waiting for the graphics to finish drawing so that I could click.

The demo seems to randomly quit itself when i put it on fast or veryfast speed, whilst waiting for a processor upgrade.. it quits just after the second email arrives..
And, if you actually purchase that upgrade, it looks funny and doesn't want to work when activated. I'll post a screenshot if I can get one.
EDIT: It's just a screen size issue... works fine on anything above 640x480.

Same here. I'm using a 450MHz G3 iMac, OS 9.
One more REALLY annoying thing. Its easy to inadvertently delete part of the command prompt in the console. Not very realistic and highly annoying.
Woah... at 10 on March 29, 2010 the game just quits with my player. I was having fun destroying central mainframes for absolutly no good reason, too! :frown:
/me can't wait to buy the full game

meh, I managed to burn out the demo in 45 minutes. Not sure what the other stuff to do that's being hinted at is. What I did play, I most certainly enjoyed, though.
