I recently did a small experiment.
What would happen if you made BG tiles with every other pixel clear? With other things it creates a crude transparency.
I worked for maybe an hour to create some fitting BG tiles to test this with. Everything looked good when testing it in the image app I was using.
Unforunatly, I learned that such tiles choke the game when loading the level. It seems transparent background tiles are not possible. Rats.

Look on the bright side: you can reproduce the effect by alternating between BG tile and empty space in a checker pattern.
OK, so it'll look like crap. Like I have a better idea.
