Ares Performance

Maybe this has been discussed before, but if so, I couldn't find it.

I just remembered I had registered Ares back in the day, so I re-downloaded it and dug out my old code. I started playing and got like 1 frame a year. This is under a 1.25Ghz Powerbook with 64 mb vRAM. I assume the problem is that I am running the game under classic. Is there any way to improve performance, apart from digging out an old OS 9 CD to boot under OS 9?

I will re-post this in help on the way if no one responds.

I didn't have any problems playing it under classic. Perhaps you should give it more RAM.

Do you mean actively allocate more RAM, or buy more? I have 768.

768? That should be enough. Are you using 10.3? Supposedly 10.3 has radeon driver problems, and even starcraft gets jerky on my laptop under os 10.3. I think the thing is just to allocate more memory to the program, or wait for the new drivers to come out.

As far as I know Ares won't work under 10.3
(It's not alone, there are other "Classic" programs that don't work properly in classic, Quark XPress for example).
I have played Ares on 10.2.8 and it's a little sluggish, too sluggish in fact.
Generally I resort to OS 9 native to play Ares, which I do a lot still.

You may find that your Powerbook won't boot natively into OS 9.
I believe that the last Mac able to do this was the last 1GHz Titanium PB.

Good luck anyhow with getting it to boot in OS 9 🙂

Oh, so it is another bug hunt then...

No, 10.3 definitely killed Ares. I normally played in on my 400Mhz iMac and it ran fine until 10.3 came along. In fact I know of people with Dual G5's who say the performance is still unplayable under 10.3...

What secret? I don't know what you are talking about...

I gave ares 500mb of RAM and it still was slow 😕 I hope future versions of X will run ares better.

Actually, Apple created the new (url="http://"http://store.apple.com/1-800-MY-APPLE/WebObjects/AppleStore.woa/71507/wo/ES3PiA8q3r1731g7tG42Ayd9HPg/0.0.7.1.0.5.21.1.8.1.0.0.0.1.0")Power Mac G4(/url) to be able to boot up under OS 9. It currently is the only Macintosh being made that has that capability, which is a bummer - no laptops support 9. :frown:

Hmm, that link has timed out... :frown:

Yeah, Apple does that after about a day. Click on the "return to store" and scroll down to the Power Mac G4 (bottom half of page). They advertize the OS 9 functionality on the front of the page.

Ah, found it.
Hm, yes OS 9 isn't quite dead yet - a bit like Ares perhaps!
