A thought on an Ares "board game"

I was wondering if anyone would be interested in something like this:

Quote

This would be based in the Ares universe, probably a bit after the fall of Earth to the Ishiman/Human Cooperative. This is how it would basically go:

One person per major gov't would be assigned as a "m etaplayer" and would control the planets and fleets of that gov't. There would be rules as to how new fleets were built and moved etc.

Generals would be assigned to a certain gov't and would fight the actual battles-the m etaplayer could also be one of the general.

When two fleets come into contact(probably only able to do such in a system), an admin would make a scenario in Hera to simulate the battle. Each of the m etaplayers on each side would assign a General to command the fleet. The two generals would then fight it out.

So it would basically be a sim of the post-Ares universe. Got the idea from Greybeard over at MaG who pointed me to a site which did basically the same thing for MechWarrior.

Interesting, sort of a hybird text/in-game RPG.

Sound fun, yet my line is too slow to run the multiplayer. :frown:

Sure, but we're a little short on staff, here.

Interesting. Sounds like capt skyblades RPG in the ev boards. (Did any of you see that?) The difference was that obviously, he basically made up the battles.

Well, post this in the officer's bar too. There are more RPG'ers there and that's where we go...

sounds cool, and i need somthing to get me back on to the bordes.

interesting. i will be in that without a doubt. 😄

Insanity has its advantages

Always the one to whine about time and connection speed. That would be me. Sounds really cool, and you could make one killer plug-in in the end, great for multi or single player. I'd do it, but again, not enough time.

I'm also interested in this "board game."
I'll try to make a "Fleet Warz" plug for this "board game", if possible.

Time is cruel. Yet without it, we cannot be.

Yeah, if the battles could actually be simulated, it would avoid a lot of arguements and disagreements. That was really the only problem I had with my EV RPG... it's next to impossible to get everyone to agree to a final statement, even if it's the moderator / admin who gives it. Another cause of arguements was new technology... we finally stopped allowing new tech as it too caused much difficulty.

The sensible thing is to have the admin/mod lay down the law right at the outset (Only "canon" Ares tech, pre-approved fleets, etc) and maintain it throughout. An impartial admin/mod, naturally.

And then it's just a matter of enforcing it- "The Judge's decision is final", I believe the phrase is.

It sounds neat, but might turn out to be really complex. Then again, maybe I'm just making it more complicated than it actually is. 😉

That's what we said in the EV RPG... only threats seemed to enforce that rule. 😉

Yes, well, that's what enforcement is all about, really. Threats, and the ability to carry through with them. This would be running from its own website, I assume?

I'll be admin, if you wish to have a fair/impartial trial with someone who does not shirk from responsibility.

Heh...

I thought of a great sig yesterday and now can't remember what it was... Oh and I'm apparently not very well liked by Joveia for reasons unknown to me... or him...
Ares plugins to date: Earth's Journey Back To The Stars, Scenario Contest and Cantharan vs. Ishiman.
Ares plugins in development: Star Trek: Ares, Viva La Resistance.

I've thought about this sort of thing on my own for a while now. I've come up with a way to create a scenario on the fly, so it might be even simpler to implement the Ares half of it. I might be able to demonstrate that some time soon

A tech tree (similar to Civilization) might be useful as well. There would be somewhere between 10 and 20 starting techs, and each faction would start off with a few of them. If you acquired 2 techs, and no player had started with both, you'd be able to build something new.

How about techs are acquired only through conquest? So there might be certain techs scattered throughout the game (every faction has there unique techs, and with, i.e., concussion missiles it's shared.) If you conquer a faction's (something) then depending on the value of it, you get a technology. Just a suggestion.

Oh, and for the record, Civ 3 sucked.

That's what I was thinking (although I guess I didn't actually say it). Each race has pushed its technology to the limits, and needs technology from other races in order to advance. The other thing to mention is that the tech tree would be secret - you have to acquire a technology before you know that you can advance with it.

Carrying them out is the important part. I had to throw a player out of one webstory because he refused to cooperate with the final decisions made by the mod, fair though they were.

Yeah, a dedicated website is a good idea... the EV forum got somewhat cluttered at times to numerous topics regarding a single webstory.
