well heres my idea at one point in the game you get an evil demonic blade with the power to summon the dead. Can such a thing be done (my idea not yours dont take)

Unfortunatly it is impossible to create npc's to fight for you, so the answer is no :frown:

Yes. The weapon has a spell. The spell is linked to an event which, through NPC Control, brings forth the dead.
Edit: He didn't ask if the dead would fight beside him. Maybe the dead attack him. It is a demonic blade. ------------------ My Doctor said I was having too much wine, women, and song - so I gave up singing because 2 out of 3 is not so bad. what some fail to remember is that spells may have a duration, spells can also have animations, these animations may also be bullets from the caster to the target.
I also imagine that the spells may use 8 directional animations as well ( who knows). Even if this is not true create your undead being animation, attach it to the spell, give the spell a high duration ( or however long the attack should last) and this will, to an extent, give you the image of NPCs attacking another NPC.
Spells don't have to be semi-transparent, floating, glowing, sparkly, ethereal, mystic...non-corporeal things/projectiles/entities.

Sounds kinda like the magic mirror spell Stark made, you could use something like that as a weapon, like ellrx was explaining

NPCs will not attack other NPCs. Sorry 'bout that.

What's Magic Mirror then?
(unless I'm mistaken, he's suggesting a similar idea...)

A similar idea, yes. Identical, no. Magic Mirror places more hero characters in the game temporarily. Yeroc wants to place dead men NPCs and have them take the shots. I don't know how Stark Bledfast constructed his Magic Mirror, maybe he is willing to share, maybe not, but they can't be merely NPCs in the guise of the hero because the game engine does not allow one NPC to attack another NPC. I'm surprised you don't know that.
Apparently Passive NPCs can't attack Hostile or Passive NPCs (which I did know), however, I believe hostiles can attack passives (I don't see any other way for magic mirror to work: There is no "add another hero" button and the magic mirror acts as an NPC following the player in NPC fashion, i.e. getting just as lost, etc.). It seems that either hostiles can attack passives or that magic mirror doesn't really do anything (Which is unlikely... though I haven't seen it take that many hits for me...cowardly mirror!). Anyway, I'm no authority... Stark, where are you?
*Puts flashing neon sign out: "Attention Stark, your presence is needed!"
He'll sort it out

There is nowhere you can instruct an NPC to attack another NPC. I now know how Stark did it, and it is sneaky. (Who would have thought otherwise of Stark?) When the spell is cast, an event call places four look-alike NPCs at the player's XY coordinates. Each are placed individually. Since no two NPCs can occupy the same tile or the tile of the hero, they spread themselves out around the hero. They act as blockers for the guy carrying the ball. The hostile NPCs do not actually attack them, but in an attempt to get at the hero, it sometimes looks as if they are attacking the "mirror" rather than the hero. Each look-alike NPC has instruction to "try to reach player" so they stay clustered around (or rather behind) the hero unless the hero outruns them. The whole thing is an illusion, and isn't that what the conjurer character is all about?
Oh, I see... Why didn't ya say so in the first place?
Because I hadn't figured it out myself until now.
Ok, have to put it on the wish-list then (waita sec, it's already on the wishlist... or wait... there is no wishlist!!!). Anyway, good critical thinking (and testing too I assume ).

No offense Yeroc, but this isn't a unique idea(having an object summon forth a creature). It is the same idea as the genie in the lamp, with the only differences being the object used and the creature summoned.
Since the idea is not unique you would have a hard time copyrighting it and taking ownership over the idea. No one can be bound not to use this idea.
Furthermore, since you have not published your game, nor do I believe have you filed any copyrights, you can't really claim intellectual property. My advice would be that if you have ideas that you feel are proprietary, that you keep them to yourself. If you need to divulge something in order to gain help to get it working correctly, then be as vague as possible with the details, and only give us the code problem.
Good luck!

when i said it was my idea i ment it ws my idea to hvae a an evil sword summon up the dead as your allies
(This message has been edited by Yeroc (edited 11-17-2003).)
I'm sure it's been done... Sorry... :frown:
P.S. Blizzard does something very similar in WarCraft 3 with Dark Arrow (I think that's what it's called...)
yes yes i have conquered all forms of blizzard entertainment but i would do it with a swing of the sword, every courpse within three game feet of the swing would spring to life (if i could do it).
Very difficult. One, because the corpses would need to spawn "corpse NPCs" (which would get in the way) and two because you can't have allied NPCs. As RD just informed me, they could be blockers, but nothing more.
blockers would work, fine how would i do this
