Pixel art question.....

My interest was peaked when Klatu posted that Pixel Art tutorial the other day. I started some tiles and I'm very pleased with how they are going so far, however, I have some very important questions....

1.) What size should I make the characters? I know coldstone works on the 96x96 tiles. I've made a few 96x96 tiles using 32x32 repeating patterns. They make some rather tight patters and look fine. I've also used 48x48. They too turned out well. But I need to know what scale to make the character? A 96x96 character? 32x32? 64x64? What would you suggest?

2.)I don't have my manual handy, can you limit movement to only 4 directions (N,E,S,W)? I'd probably make weapons and magic work on 360 degrees but I want that classic 2D movement scheme.

Thanks.

You could open the Medieval characters folder on your Coldstone CD and measure the characters in there, they fit nicely in PoG.

Hey Asylum.

As far as I know, the CGE Characters can be any size.

Relating to your moving only 4 directions question - sure! It's easy! When you're in the animation editor, just plug in all four directions, and instead of hitting the "Directional 8" button at the bottom just press "Directional 4." This will only allow a player/NPC to move in the 4 directions, N, S, E, and W.

Good luck!

I think that the upper limit for a characters graphic is 800x800! That gives you a whole lot of room to experiment in!

Also If your tile drawings are 32x32 then I'll let you know what size the i am using for the main characters that i am using in two games currently in development by myself... One is roughly 90x40 on his profile and the other is 32x32 doubled to 70x70 for that good old pixelated look!

I hope that helps!
