Hello,
I was just wondering... Does anyone know why Coldstone was named Clodstone?
I've read a couple interviews with Dee and I don't believe that this was ever asked.
I'm just curious and I thought that some of you guys might be, too.

Its a good name. Like Pillars of Garendall or Cythera or something, it gives a hook. And its a cool name for a game developer. Other than that, I have no clue. Hope I helped! Bye!~~Chrios

Maybe when Beenox was first making it, it was very clumsy? But seriously, it sounds cooler to say "Made with ColdStone" than it is to say "Made with TNTBasic," to give an example.

It's just funny because whenI was considering buying this app I was on a trip to L.A. and there is a kick @$$ icecream shop called... Coldstone!
I just thought that was funny - strange coincidence because that's not the most commen name, you know!

I did a search on the internet for the name Coldstone and it came up on sites about medieval gargoyles. Did you misspell, Clodstone, intentionaly or was that a Freudian slip? I think Celchu took you seriously there.
Clodstone was a misspelling - I'll edit it!
Thanks!
Because...... Dee was hiking, thinking for a name for the then Beenox Game Engine and he sat down, lost in thought, and jumped up again saying 'Damn that rock is cold!" One thing led to another, and the word 'rock' was replaced with 'stone' since it sounds so much cooler, and thus Coldstone was christened.
Actually, I have no idea how it got named. But I don't mind if people guess.... tell you what. We'll hold a little competition. Everyone who posts has a guess, and then after a little while I'll email Dee and ask him about it, and the one who was closest gets a karma point or two.
Have fun!

Um, I've got an idea. It just sounded cool.

Alright, so Dee & co. are located up in Canada, which everyone knows is just a stone's throw from the arctic circle and thus the temperature's are constantly frigid. Well, one evening "the boys" all huddled together after spending an exhausting day working on "the project" and the decided they needed to come up with a name. Several hours later after consuming grimace proportions of cheap beer someone pulled out the "pipe of eternal bliss." Several puffs of happy smoke later one of the boys commented, "Duuuuuuuuude, I'm totally stoned, and it's freezing in here, I'm cold." This provoked much laughter and taunting, and this person was named by a stroke of prophetic genius a "Cold-stoner." Needless to say when the next morning dawned and the purple haze had faded, they remembered "Cold-stoner" and thought it sounded good. And if a person who used "the project" was a "Cold-stoner," then the project just had to be named "Coldstone."
And thus it came to pass.
(Style points anyone?)

here is the official verifiable truth, no guessing, no pondering just the truth ::cracks open eternal vault of his memory:: back when i was ill_a_nois, before ambrosia, before there was sprite animation/ before realtime, and the engine looked very much like exile with separate battle planes
Coldstone as it is currently called, is named after one of Beenox's old initial games,i believe the game was never released/never got much attention,so instead of wasting a perfectly profound name they simply liked the name and branded the engine Coldstone.

Well, thats all well and good about how the Game Editor became known as "Coldstone," but it doesn't even begin to explain how the name "Coldstone" came into being in the first place.
For that I point you to my above post which, if you read it carefully, doesn't point to the game engine in particular, but rather the initial point of conception for the name "Coldstone."

that's nice, seeing as hw that was an experience that lead to the naaming of the game they scrapped that had the name coldstone, i see no connection, to the question how coldStoneGameEngine, which is the game engine became known as coldstone. To reiterate Your referring to how the name came to be, which was not the question.

Well, my original intention was how the actual name of Coldstone was thought up. I vaguely remembered Beenox had a game that was to be named Coldstone way back when. OK, question is modified: where did the actual name Coldstone come from?
I think the name Coldstone was made up after Beenox made The game engine. Everything in the engine is usually blue, so Beenox thought of cold. stone was probably because the game engine creates lots of diifferent games, and basiclly no rocks are the same, they are all shapes, colors, sizes, rocks are absoluty different from one another and can be any shape, size, ect. Also for stone would be, the engine is powerful, but easily works anywhere anytime. That is just a crazy wild guess :)! ~~Chrios
OK, let's make it a little more difficult - Why is it named Coldstone is good, but why the blue tree on a square "rock"?
Mwahahahaha! >

Child's play, my dear Klatu. I had ended the story where appropriate, but you are just asking for, as Paul Harvey would say, the rest of the story.
We had left off after a frigid night of partying whereby the terms "Cold-stoner" and "Coldstone" had become coined phrases. Well after the initial game which was thus dubbed "Coldstone" and which ended in cancellation, and the subsequent "project" which was in fact a game engine was created and also named "Coldstone" in part due to a memory, but mostly due to this being such a great name, the company needed a logo to present their new product by and to make it recognizeable to the world. Something grand was needed, not to mention that the best logos always are a symbol of ones origins. This would take a lot of creative genius to figure out, and a whole lot of thought. In other words, another all-night party was absolutely necessary.
The entire staff was assembled and packed into the very same location that derived the earlier incarnation of greatness, and the night was just as low in temperature as before. The staff treated themselves to much adult beverages, and shortly thereafter the holy rod of happy smoke was once again produced. However this time something unexpected happened. One of the members of the staff whom will forever remain nameless(the staff swore oaths of silence never to reveal this person's name), must have inhaled a bit too much, because the results were spectacular(In retrospect, one of the employees stated that the results really weren't all that spectacular. But the effects of the wacky weed made it at the time seem spectacular). The aforementioned unnamed employee became quite flatulant in his demeanor, and when he passed the pipe and the next person over struck a match to re-ignite it, he ignited more than the blissful essence. The voracious vapors immediately caught, propelling the unnamed employee into the air. After the excitement the necessary ribbing commenced, and amidst all the banter and joking one of those gathered exclaimed that he had thought that the unnamed employee was attempting to launch himself to greatness, indeed to borrow a much used colloquialism, to infinity and beyond! This of course inspired a near divine-like creativity, and the next day produced the logo that we are now accustomed to seeing.
But wait, you might say, how did we get from that scene to the present day logo? It seems like such a stretch, not to mention there doesn't appear to be a link at all between the two. Well, just hold on, because it will all make sense in a moment.
You see publicly Beenox has issued their logo for all to see. And it looks like a tree growing out of a stone. Their reasoning, at least publicly, is that their company is metaphorically the bonzai tree: even in harsh, unfertile and unforgiving soil(ie. the Mac platform with its limited user base and often the butt of the other 95% computer platform users jokes), this company will grow and flourish. Indeed it shall take hold where most others wither and die, and it shall reach unprecedented heights of stature and glory, dominating all others to the point that everyone becomes envious. This is a very nice PR type of thing; forward-thinking, goal driven, confidience inspiring. It is a great thing for a small company to do.
However, privately, the entire staff can smile and grin at the "hidden" meaning of the logo. Because you see, that logo is not just a tree growing out of some stone. No, that symbol represents the entire saga that has been told for you, so that its story shall never be forgotten. None of this would have been possible had it not been for that special little weed; however placing such a well-known symbol in their logo would have doomed the company to endless protests and boycotts. No, they could not be that blatant. So instead they utilized that divine-like creativity from that fateful night.
The logo is actually a representation of this fateful evening. The tree isn't a tree; how could it be? The leaves and branches are just too flowing, round, and un-treelike. The base is gripping that "stone" just a bit much; not like the bonzai tree would ever do. No, to the trained eye this logo is definitely not what it seems on the surface. Only the trained eye, or an informed one, could ever hope to pick the reality out of the illusion. And that reality is one of a mushroom cloud billowing out from within a cannabis brownie. And if you think about it for a moment, everything ought to make perfect sense.
(edit) I had to correct a typo, as I'd hate to be decried a heretic for misspelling cannabis. Yes, this does make sense - but I think in the future I'll pick my challanges/questions more wisely!
Thanks for showing such a, dare I say, spark of interest in my question enough to answer it in such detail! ------------------ Here's my site! There is art, music, movies, and games are on there way! (url="http://"http://www.sinthesisent.com")http://www.sinthesisent.com(/url)

I must admit Stark, you have proven to be very creative. But I can't help asking another question. Anyone who has been here long enough knows that the previous logo was a bald guy. The only picture I've been able to find on the web has an ugly "Q & A" thing on it, but oh well. You can find it here: (url="http://"http://www.AmbrosiaSW.com/webboard/faq_coldstonewbbadge.gif")http://www.AmbrosiaS...tonewbbadge.gif(/url) (Note: This picture is also in the manual just before the Intro heading.) So, Stark, where did the bald guy come from? Just curious.

I remember that bald guy... I was shocked when I loaded the Upcoming page for the fourth time that day and found a bunch of badly cut metal letters in the place of our beautiful mad scientist.

un stuffing the old old illegal for everyone else to use but me since i registered it a long time ago befor ambrosia came along and while i thought coldstone to turn into vaporwaree as i waited innumerable month after monthand will not distribute to any of no matter how hard you beg/bribe so don't waste your time.
There once was a walrus, an Offender, and an illernois e (and a bunch of other guys who's names escape me), who frequented the beenix weboard back when it was hosted on hypermart as a subdomain. the release was b8.1. The people used coldstone as it was, but wanted animations, other wise as the illernoise exclaimed "it's perfect", "i love it" said another. And then b8.5 came and then a silence and echoing hush fell upon the progress log and after a time Deeappeared long story short
long story cut dynamically short, the old graphics are as follows: •application icon was a piece of diamond shaped slate with a scroll and a pencil •the in game logo where you saw the professor was a man standing in midst of stone henge with a huge overlay of gears in the back ground. •as well as a secondary graphic that sat upon the "locate game folder" window that was a misty swampy location, with caligraphic text that said "ColdStone Game Engine" located in the included scenario town that was completely mouse driven. •the old beenox logo was a giant cog with the words beenox in it. • The design was blue stone married with a cog, with the exception f the foggy location in the sample town there were no trees anywhere in the designs from b5-b8 no until the ambrosia versions camee about did the tree graphic appear. I was there
