you can download an educational versooin of maya for free legally from somewhere on their site....although it's difficult to get a download going due to high amounts of server traffic......and you can also get a free full version of softimage from their site mailed to you (with tutorial cds, maunals, et al) if you feel secure enough in giving them your address.

I paid over $15000, but that was for maya unlimited, plus maya fur and maya cloth.
They also have maya unlimited (the full version, complete is just a "blue collar version") for I think $6000.
Yeah, this is extremely cheap. If you can get it, and if you really want the top of the line 3D program, now is the time.

...I was wondering what it took to get negative karma on this board.
I think the anonymous nature of the internet and the "boom" of the mid-late 90's (where everyone was giving away free stuff online to attract new customers) has created an army of folks who think it's their God given right to have everything they want for free. Of course, pirated software goes back to the days before WWW's and even BBS's, but the conversations I've had with developers lead me to believe that we would all have more, better, and cheaper software if there wasn't so much time invested in preventing theft.
On the topic of this thread, though... I guess I find it pretty funny to think that someone would blow 2 grand on a 3D modeling app after spending such a small amount on the Coldstone game engine. (The guys who made Nanosaur license their game engine for a couple thousand bucks.)
