3D GRAPHICS PROGRAMS...

-29ยฐ

I know this has been brought up many times i just didn't feel the need to go looking through all the pages of this board to find an old topic...

I recently acquired Amapi 3D v4.15 ,
cough (url="http://"http://idevgames.com")idevgames.com(/url) cough ::wink wink::
Besides the fact that it's an excellent 3D , interface is lacking (compared to meshworks) , it also comes with a wealth of textuees
and exportable formats...

The question however is , what software was used to create the landscapes in deimos rising ?
Lemme guess bryce right ??

What's everyone else using (besides paper and pencil) ?

Yeah, that idevgames offer is extremely cool... I've just started to mess around with Amapi myself as a result. Anyone else who needs a free powerful 3d program (who doesn't? ๐Ÿ™‚ ), go for it! Be sure to register online though, as idevgames states that the number of people who register is one of the things which will help them to decide whether to offer such things again in the future.

As far as Deimos Rising goes, I haven't any idea, and I don't see any mention of applications in the progress log. Why not e-mail David Wareing?

If I try to actually make a finished Coldstone project (still undecided; I dunno if I have the time), I was originally planning to work almost exclusively in PhotoShop, with maybe a little help from Bryce. Now that I've got Amapi, I'm reconsidering... I need to mess around with it and see how it works; I might wind up with rendered characters after all.

Another great, free 3d program out there is strata.
you might wanna check that out as well. (url="http://"http://www.strata3d.com/")http://www.strata3d.com/(/url)

I use (url="http://"http://www.cinema4d.com")Cinema 4D(/url), (url="http://"http://www.hash.com")Animation Master(/url), and Infini-D (America's Funniest Home Videos was still airing new episodes when the company that made Infini-D folded... whee!)

most of this stuff is pretty expensive though -- I have a LOT of software because I work for a University, and I get free stuff of all shapes and sizes. For those of you with more restricted wallets, I'd suggest one of these puppies:
(url="http://"http://www.3d.com/home.html")Strata(/url), (url="http://"http://www.pixels.net")Pixels 3D(/url), or (url="http://"http://www.corel.com")Bryce 4(/url).
I don't know much about any other low-cost apps, so I couldn't say.

Think about making that $300 investment in (url="http://"http://www.hash.com")Animation Master(/url) though. You'll get a lot out of it, and it's not that hard to learn.

Yup, idevgames is indeed cool, especially seeing as I am the iDG Network Webmaster (that means I design and implement all the subdomains on the server ;)).

I'm using lightwave but I'm gonna say that if you have an x86 computer or enough juevos to install a linuxppc partition it's all about blender (www.blender.nl), which is also free. Still, since I have neither enough "eggs" or a pc it's all about expensive, able to run in classic mode software for me.

Hi Griggs!

Who would have thunk?

how's the poll going, btw?

well, as i consider myself a graphics professional (shameless lying self-promotion) i would suggest the program i use: lightwave 6.5 (thanks to my wonderful school ๐Ÿ™‚ ), but then again, i have personally used animation master which is a god send, considering how much it costs, only 300!! plus, it's made in my home town (go vancouver washington). animation master is way better than any program even near it's genre, and is ranked among some of the top 3d programs, just because of it's affordibility, professionalism, and ease-of-use. but then again, i use lightwave ๐Ÿ™‚

(btw, why da heck do you use infini-d, that prog sucks hard core)

hehe
we're gettin Animation Master and ElectricImage next year at school (AND 3 new G4's!!!!)...I'm so happy!!
but I would recommend ElectriImage 100% (i had an old version, before I left the CD in the sun and wiped it from my computer cuz I stopped modelling due to laziness)

SO how do you make the characters you make look like the 8-bit and 16-bit day? I know the color part but how do you make it ((pixelated?)(not sure if it's called that?) like if u make a circle in photoshop it is smooth, but a 16-bit game circle would be rough

A lot of it is a matter of visual style.

While most 16-bit console games were capable of using thousands or millions of colors, they typically did not, because the artists weren't used to having that kind of freedom available to them. Look at the shading; The difference in style between something like FF6 and FF7 is largely due to the flat shading used in FF6, versus the fully-rendered shading in FF7.

You can see similar differences with old cartoons versus some of the newer, flashier ones. Go watch Scooby Doo, and you'll see an example of flat-shaded animation. This is typical of what we think of as "Cartoons." Now, go check out almost anything you would call "Computer Animated," for example, the new FF movie, and you'll notice that the shading is what distinguishes it from a cartoon. Despite the fact that contemporary "cartoons" are done on computers (South Park, Powerpuff Girls, etc), they use flat shading for the cartoon feel. It's a matter of style.

So it is with "16-bit" console games. The look is more a matter of style than any particular technical trick.

well, that's part of it... there are a whole lot more differences between cell and computer animation -- but I won't get into that on this topic.

if you really want an 8-bit feel to your graphics, there are some things you might want to keep in mind.

ย• draw out a basic character by hand. you need to know what you're aiming for no matter what style you're using.
ย• if you're using something like photoshop to make your characters with, then limit your pallet to something like an old Apple 256 color standard.
ย• generally, the reason why 8-bit games looked so "pixelated," is because the screen resulotion they were using was so low. choose a low res for your game screen (640x480 - maybe even 320x240...), and figure out how big your character would be in comparison to the whole screen.
ย• once you know approximately how big your character sprite would be, you can work within those bounds. part of the 8-bit style is that it is so limited, so to mimic it you'll need to impose limits on yourself.
ย• an easy way to do things in 3D (if you are so inclined) would be to just render out your graphics at a low resolution and then bring them into photoshop and clean up the details there. that would save you time on animation, as well.

I said all of that very briefly, but I can ellaborate if any of it wasn't clear enough. but remember, like saphfire said, there is no set method for creating that type of graphics -- "8-bit" is really just a generalized name for a common style of graphics used at that time.
