movie formats

If I recall correctly, we have all of the powers of quicktime to do our fmv's. So, I was wondering, can we scale the movies so that they aren't full screen (like if we wanted to use one as a spell or something). Also, which version of quicktime do we have full support with. I ask (and actually, I asked awhile ago but no one answered sniff) because quicktime 5 has flash 5 (or maybe 4, but that's still cool) support, which can be abused for making high tech interface stuff for digitized stores or some sort of cheezy hacker world thing like they have in the movies. you could also use flash to make full screen weather effects that take up very little hard drive space or processor power.

There are a couple of problems with your logic. First, quicktime doesn't support transparency very well. (arguably there are the alpha video modes, but how well do those work? Not very) Thus, if you wanted a spell effect to be a movie, it'd always have the same background... Ugh. Flash 4 is sortof included in QT 5, (technically, it also was in later builds of 4) but performance and sync to other tracks is horrible. Full screen flash movies take a large amount of processor power, yes, even up to twice as much as a full quality sorenson or MPEG encoding. They do take up less HD space though. Don't expect Coldstone to support the interactive features.

Until we get more information about how Coldstone supports animated graphics, I'd recommend you stick with cutscenes. I think it is safe to assume that all users that can run Coldstone will have QT 3 or better, but there may be a way to test for this in the engine. We'll have to wait and see.
