i have seen much discussion about what 3d apps/techniques should be used in the creation process....
anyone else out there planning on using 2d artwork...?

It really depends on your medium here, I think. Large sprites are just gonna look better if rendered with a 3d program, unless you're a great artist. (ex. Saga Frontier 1: yuck) Small sprites on the other hand, will look much better if done by hand. (ex: all of squares FF games before 7) Personally, I prefer small, hand-drawn sprites for most games. Your mileage my vary.
