Help me out here.....

Alright, is the artwork in Coldstone 3d? Like in the movies....is that 3-d artwork? Or is it just 2d, and the engine gives perspective? If all the artwork is 3-d, I am screwed......

Good point I'd like to hear a response from a moderator on this one...

The graphics were created as 3D models, then rendered to 2D sprites and then used in the game. Coldstone is a 2D graphics engine, but you can model the graphics in perspective (as we have), if you like.

What did you use to create the artwork?

Well, they used a 3-D modelling program, of course. I don't know what specific program they used, but popular character animation programs include Animation Master, Lightwave, 3-D Studio MAX, and Maya. Currently, 3-D Studio MAX and Maya are PC only.

If you're looking to get into 3-D modelling and animation, especially that of the human figure, I can't recommend Animation Master ( (url="http://"http://www.hash.com")http://www.hash.com(/url) ) enough. I recently switched to it from Ray Dream Studio, and wished I would have found it much much sooner. Animation Master may have a steep learning curve, but it's also the only program on the above list under $3000... in fact, it's a bargain at $299.

The advantage to using a character animation program to render your characters is that once you have a proper figure defined, you can render just about any artwork you need by setting up the correct pose and camera angle. AM even has a 'toon' rendering engine, if you want your artwork to be flat-shaded.

OK, enough with the commercial, but I've been using Macs for 12 years, and AM is one of maybe six programs I've ever been truly impressed with (Photoshop, Bryce, Metasynth and Reaktor being on that list, and it looks like Coldstone will be, too).

A couple other options...
Strata 3D is a free download.
Amorphium is $50.00.
POV-Ray (an excellent ray-trace renderer) is a free download.

Pixels 3D is also a free d/l (at least a week ago it was).
And, of course, Mechanisto.
