NPC Friends and more

Hello Everybody...

First of all let me say I'm very excited about the Coldstone project, it looks awesome.
In my eyes it's one of the best things that has happened to the Mac in a long time.
However I have some questions

  1. I'm currently working on the story and background of my Coldstone game, and I started wondering if NPC's will be able to join the player like Final Fantasy, otherwise I won't spend hours fleshing out cool NPC characters.

  2. Will I be able to link images to weapons and armor, and place them correctly so they show on the character in the Inventory screen, so like if I equip a kevlar vest it will show on the chest etc. (something similar to Diablo)

  3. When a new weapon is equipped, will I be able to change the character graphics so you can see if he's holding a pistol or a shotgun or whatever (I'm making a futuristic game as you might've guessed).

------------------

I like the idea of NPCs but not the ideas of futuristic weapons being around. I love older syle games where you fight with bows and arrows as well as swords, clubs, and axes. The idea to show what the person is holding is also another good though.

My question is if there are already character shots (ex. Realmz) available to use for the making of your game?

1) I'm afraid I don't know. In my copy you couldn't but, then again, it is a very different version from todays copy.

**2) & 3)**I was toying with this idea n my old copy, and it is possible, but the number of sprites you would need would rank in the millions. You see, there is an event which allows you to change the sprite of the player when another event is called (eg. Putting on an item), however, it only allows you to change sprites, not modify them, so you would have tp have a sprite for every different combination of item. This is only in my very early version, so it might of changed in the Ambrosia copy. It's worth e-mailing Dee about, he would know if it's in this version.

I think other NPCs joining your party is a big, important part of RPG games. This feature is most likely included in Coldstone, but I guess we won't know for sure until more information about the more "in-game" features is given.

This was an idea I posted in another topic. I like the idea of having the party made up of the dwarf, barbarian, thief, elf, et cetera. I hope I will be able to do this in Coldstone...

I thought of that too and dismissed it for the same reason (too many sprites needed). each and every weapon would change the appearance of a charactor and while that would be nice, it would not be practical to draw the many different combos that could be made with equiptment, weapon, and other items.

something i've been wondering about... will you be able to have NPCs join your group, but remain NPCs {i.e. they fight on their own, i suppose choosing randomly from their attacks}

I hope so... I don't like the idea of the player controlling the whole group -- it's unrealisitic.

Bart Simpson Blackboard Quote of the Day: The First Amendment does not cover burping.

In reply to the ability to show a change in a character's sprites:
This could be possible if you only change the sprite for hugely noticible additions to the player. For exampleonly changing the sprites when the character is now holding a sword instead of a dagger. Changes in things such as belts boots and other low key elements are not needed. Creating a list of things that you feel would be noteworthy changes may cut down on the amount of sprites necessary.

The project Gav and you are working on would probably require the different races and castes. This would make for an improved game.
