Would it be illegal to make a game based on a book, like to the letter. Like a game based on the hobbit. or the Camaloud chronicles.

Short answer: Yes.
Just ask the TSR folks (AD&D;). They had to change 'Hobbit' to 'Halfling' to avoid legal trouble. Now it is possibly that the material may be used with permission or licensed thereby making it a legal use but that is entirely up to the original creator or whatever publishing company owns the rights.<BR><BR>And if you want to charge money for you game then you may even have to pay royalties.

Probably would be but I don't think that you would want to srictly follow the storyline. If you also edit the line and change names, you have a unique game, unknown by the book corporations
