pre-rolled player characters?

This may have been answered before, but is it possible to start the player off with a character with a specific name, gender, set of stats, etc? Instead of letting them make their own. Also, would it be possible to allow the player to select one from a group of characters, with the other characters becoming NPCs in the player's party?

Hmm, good question. I think I know this though. You probably will be able to program it to do so. I think there is the ability to have NPC's join your group during the game (ex.Realmz-Vodalion) and you will probably be able to put already made charactors in the game (Realmz style again). The last question is a little confusing. Do you mean you pick one person from a group of people to be in your group while the other follows the group around? If that is what you mean, than probably would be the answer. You might just want to pick the entire group instead of just one. Or you combine the person in the group with people from other groups to form a group. The following may work out nicely but could possibly make the game too easy. What I would do i a game like that is get a bunch of people from different groups and put them in a group so all the others would follow. Do you see the problem with that line of thinking? It could work though. The stats can be either Realmz style (computer generated) or player created (with limits of course). I hope it has a Realmz style option because I love the way it forms it (completely random, the only way to change any is to re-roll all of them, which could make the person better or worse). I hope this answers your questions.

Oh, to have preset charactors, you just program them yourself and send them with the game so the person can have the choice to either make their charactors or use the ones that or along with the game. You would probably want to have some good combos there so they won't feel pressured to make their own.

What I meant was, suppose you're doing a game based on A. Conan Doyle's "The Lost World". There is a group of characters in the story, namely Prof. Challenger, Prof. Summerlee, Sir John Ralston and Edward Molloy (I might have gotten those wrong, but it don't matter). To stay faithful to the original, you want to give the player the option of playing any of those characters. If the player picks Molloy, all the others become NPCs in his party.

I think of RPGs as a kind of storytelling, and stories depend on characters with certain personality traits. If the point of the story is, say, to marry the princess by fulfilling certain tasks, it will be a completely different story if you play as a lowly peasant, a barbarian or an evil wizard. It's a matter of taste, but I like to keep some control over the story content.

A thousand times yes, in the preferences menu, you can lock out changes
(to the name,attribute,spells etc.) and such...

In this idea, would you only be able to choose, say Molloy, and still be able to pick other charactors from other groups? Or do you just get to pick a person from this group while the others become NPCs?
