Bug: When I start DEFCON, none of the text shows up. I just get blocks where any text should be. I'm thinking my system cannot handle the game, even though it meets the stated minimum system requirements.

Got screenshots?
Below are a couple of screenshots. The first is the first screen after the Introversion screen after opening DEFCON. The second is after I close the top window by clicking the upper right hand button on it. There seem to be bands on the images that aren't there on the screen when I have the program open, but you get the idea of the text not looking right.
OS X 10.5.0
MacBook 2GHz C2D 1GB RAM (GMA 950 graphics)
Can't open the new game setup screen and can't join a game or start the tutorial. When I click on "New Game", this is what I see:
Additionally, the game wasn't able to create debug.txt until I manually created a DEFCON subdirectory in ~/Library/Logs. It simply failed with the error message (0x0-0xde0de).uk.co.introversion.Defcon(2177) Failed to open debug.txt for writing.
Here's my (slightly abridged) debug.txt :

It appears that DEFCON is having trouble with your network setup. The first thing I would try is this:
- From the main menu, hit "Options"
- Hit "Network"
- Enable port forwarding
If this doesn't work, I would look at your firewall settings -- both on you machine ("System Preferences" -> "Sharing" -> "Firewall", and make sure that the UDP ports listed in the DEFCON Network dialog are Allowed), and on your router/modem. I would be willing to bet that this will get things working. If not, please report back here.

By clicking and dragging, you can defeat some auto-cancel measures, such as when you try to bomb your own cities.

What I mean is if you click anywhere else, drag your mouse to wherever, and then release. Haven't tried doing this for targeting your own ships or airplanes.

This is not really a bug, per se. In fact, it is a tactic that is discussed quite often on the IV boards. It may not be what the developers intended, but it is now considered an important part of the game by most top players. In fact, I should point out that there is no "auto-cancel." When you left-click on one of your own units in an attempt to target it with a weapon, it selects the unit, rather than targeting it. It is similar to what happens when you left-click on an enemy ship with a bomber in launch mode selected -- you would think that the bomber would launch the nuke, but, instead, it switches to naval combat mode, and targets the enemy ship.

I guess it shows how little I've played.
Just sayin', it's possible to bomb your own cities. Unless you mean that it's actually a tactic to do that.

There are a few tactics that involve bombing your own cities, or the cities of an ally.
The first is the tactical self-nuke in a diplomacy game. In most diplomacy games, the leader is targeted by everyone. Thus, if you can nuke one of your cities early on, you will no longer have a perfect score. So people will mostly ignore you. Potentially, if they ignore you long enough, they exhaust all of their nukes on other people, leaving you as the winner.
The second is back-stabbing. In DEFCON, backstabbing is not only possible, but encouraged. When you are allied with someone, the only way to target their stuff is as you describe. So, surface your subs, target their stuff as per the above, and wait until the last minute to leave the alliance (assuming you don't get kicked first).

Defcon v1.43
Bug Description: I'm running into the exact same problem as ORBAT above. I had this problem with an earlier version of Defcon, and thought the newest version might help... nothing has changed. I click on New Game and get the same screen as above, or I click on Tutorial and just get a "Preparing Game..." window (content: "Tutorial Starting") that doesn't go away.
Tried fiddling with firewall settings and port forwarding... nothing.
Any ideas?

Defcon crashes without a bug log if I click the Allies tab as a spectator. Was logged in as admin in my firing squad server (Yes, its mine.) Bug is reproducable.
Anyone? I've heard great things about this game, and it's annoying to not be able to play it at all.

It sounds like a problem with a misconfigured network, somewhere along the line. What happens if you shut down all network connections?

Hmm... I'm using PPPoE to connect, so I first tried just unplugging my Ethernet connection. That didn't change the situation at all. Then I turned PPPoE off and tried again: that time, I got stuck at the opening "Introversion Software" screen — the program froze there.

OS Version: Mac OS X 10.5.1
Model: PowerBook5,7, BootROM 4.9.1f1, 1 processor, PowerPC G4 (1.2), 1.67 GHz, 2 GB
Bug: Crashes when I launch the software. I installed lots of mods this afternoon, and after activating most of them (including baCON etc.) defcon crashed and didn't want to launch again. I deleted it from the applications folder, re-downloaded it and re-installed it, but it still does not want to launch. I'll reboot my laptop right now as it did not boot for a few days but don't think it'll change anything...
Please help me!!!

It sounds like your problem is being caused by a conflict in your mods. So I would first try turning off the mods. You can do this by deactivating them in the preferences file, which should be in ~/Library/Preferences/co.uk.introversion.defcon.prefs . Open it up, and the format should be pretty clear. If that doesn't help, let us know.

Hey Darwinian, I did what you told me... and it worked perfectly!!! Thanks a lot, I owe you one!!!
fyi, the preferences files was not "co.uk.introversion.defcon.prefs" but "uk.co.introversion.defcon.prefs", dunno why
Thanks again for this quick answer!!!

Indeed, you are correct. My bad.
As to why, it is the URI of the company that makes the game, in reverse order. So, introversion.co.uk, in reverse order is uk.co.introversion. I'm glad I could help.
