UPDATE: Take this as a lesson that persistence is gold! I managed to do it now.
How totally necessary is the power-up offered by The Race? This may be admitting that I suck, but I'm finding it ridiculously hard! I've only managed to survive it once so far and I wasn't even kind of close on time.

Keep firing the whole race that'll help you survive. Take the booster strips (the >>> on the paper) and that will speed you up. As for necessity, well, it's MUCH better shields
On the other hand, for me the trick was to fire as little as possible, and just duck by everything I could. Shooting slowed me down, and the places I had to shoot were the bottlenecks. The mines were the worst, since it was a long time before I was able to aim at them quickly enough.

That's true, but in the interest of keeping it simple was the core of my suggestion.
