Consolidated suggestions/bug reports

I get the feeling there'll be a lot.

Why not make it easier to keep track of suggestions and bug reports? I move we put new stuff here where the moderators and game developers can easily find it. Here's my list (running on a Mac Mini 1.42GHz with OS 10.3.8):

  1. Hotkeys for your different active programs would be very useful, as would a move-camera-to-see-program key. If this exists already, add it to the Doc's helpful comments.

  2. For some reason, at one point every time I clicked, a large yellow rectangle appeared on the screen and then slowly faded away. This kept me from doing anything with the mouse (clicking did nothing else; I couldn't select groups or anything), but went away after I left and re-entered an area. Hitting spacebar caused the rectangle to disappear (only to reappear when I clicked again).

  3. Sometimes controlling Squads on inclines becomes very difficult. Notably, there's an island in the second level - the island after the one with the Officer research - whose control tower spawns Squads on such a steep incline that they can't move. Either that, or I'm missing something when it comes to controlling Squads. This control issue is especially aggravating as viruses have no such limitation.

  4. Support for Dvorak keyboards would be nice; that is, some things like the camera movement keys should be updated so that their positions make sense (wasd is useless in Dvorak, but ,aoe is the equivalent), but others (like ^C to kill programs) should be the same.

  1. If I click my middle mouse button (the scroll wheel) the camera zooms in but it won't zoom out when I release. So then I'm stuck zoomed in and it becomes really difficult to move around like that. Only once I finished and went to the next level (I was in the Garden) did the camera reset.

  2. I think this was mentioned in another topic, but sometimes it can be too easy to send units through a radar dish. In Containment on the farthest island with the radar dish up the hill, I would create a squad next the control tower and they would straight away disappear through the radar dish when I didn't want them to. Once I had cleared that island I would send the darwinians through this same dish where I had an officer waiting at the other end telling them to go across the other side island. But as they arrived through the dish and started off in the direction the officer was pointing they'd all get sucked back through the dish.

This is a known bug, and I'm sure a fix is under way.

Just be careful where you place the squad program when you spawn it. Also, squads should always be able to move downhill, but are limited by steepness while moving upwards.

Viruses do have somewhat of a limitation, since they are slowed down significantly by steep hills. They work in a similar way as Darwinians do, in that they can go up anything, but it can just take a very long time. Squads are meant to be restricted, or else some things would be far too easy.

You should be able to go to the Input Settings menu and change the key settings to what you like.

This is something that was happening for me on one of the earlier beta's but seemed to have been fixed. What hardware/os are you using?

This can happen sometimes, and you just have to be careful to place the squads away from the radar dishes. It's been mentioned in the beta a couple of times, and a fix may be implemented in the future.

iMac G5 1.8, 10.3.8. I noticed if I hold command it will zoom out again but it will go back as soon as I release.

This one's a nasty sucker, unfortunately.

I'm on the Yard, and I've gotten to the point where I'm up against the ant infestation. I'm out of Darwinians, but that's not the issue. The issue is that when I enter the Yard, it crashes in about 8 seconds. I've gotten a log from the console:

This is more of a suggestion I guess:

Units do not go round corners. Granted Engineers can travel over 'water' so its not much of a problem for them but squads, officers and any other unit will always get stuck if theres a corner in their path. Its infuriating and any other RTS has ways around this.

EDIT: One more thing, an ability to select more than one program at a time would be nice. 2 squads could extremely quickly clean a place of virii.

Can you also get a crash log? In Console, click the Logs icon (or View > Show Logs List), click the arrows to expand ~/Library/Logs then CrashReporter. There may well be a "Darwinia.log" in there. Copy that as far down as the "Binary Images Description" section (which is, apparently, mostly useless, as well as being very long).

I'd guess this is a design decision. You are controlling these Squads and Darwinian officers; from what I've played so far (just unregistered levels) it would be too easy if you could just tell a Squad to go to the other side of the island, and have them fight off the virii by themselves! This aspect is less RTS and more old-style arcade. I like it, anyway... 😉

Well they don't need to do anything, just a bit of sense in going round corners 😄 They could get wiped out for all I care on the way there. 🙂

I think I remember getting a message after a crash telling me to look at a file called blackbox.txt in my home directory, although I may be confusing that with another game.

Yeah, Darwinia usually generates a blackbox file during crashes. If it did generate one, it would've brought up a message box saying so.
