Everyone stationed in auxiliary control, and every sailor on board the Montgomery , stood to attention as Lyda Cottrell spoke the names of the dead. Twenty-five names: she read them all over the shipwide comm system, from the most junior casualty--young Jamie McGraff of Northstar, torpedoman--to Commander Jena Tyne and Captain Rafael DeCosta. Without the underlying murmur of the ship's engines, Cottrell thought that she could hear her voice echoing through every deck. Only two people in auxiliary control shed tears, and even those were shed in silence. The air was filled not with sadness so much as a deep solemnity, a truly specific gravity that overcomes people--especially the young--when they realize what loss is like.
I like it, PlanetPhil. Can't wait to read more.

Thanks, guys. It will be about three months before part four appears here. I am currently working on part five, and now expect things to end with part seven.

Do...what, I wonder?
Good story, one of the best. Also the hyperspace theroy form the last instalments were good. Some of the best writing, like the Omega Conspiracy.

Have this whole thing turn out to be a simulation. The only reason I thought that was because of the one ship's similarity in name to the Kobashi (sp?) Maru.
Captain Whitehawk: We talked about hyperspace theory a while back, didn't we? Thanks for the kind words! And yes, "The Omega Conspiracy" is great.
Lonevoinian: Alas for Jena Tyne, this is no simulation...
The whole "maru" thing is interesting: I've learned since starting the story that this Japanese word is used as a general suffix for ship names (indeed, as in Kobayashi Maru ). And there really was a cargo ship called the Koto Maru ; it was sunk by the USS Flasher in 1945. Not that I knew that before; I stole the ship's name from the Frederick Forsyth novel, The Odessa File.

Thanks :). 'Zero Moment' is great, IMO.
