pop-pop and OS 10.3

Two of my friends and I can not seem to play pop-pop with OS 10.3. Two of us have Powerbooks and one has a desktop DP450. The game goes to launch and then crashes. Yes, we've trashed the preferences and then reinstalled and the same thing happens. (Once in a while, the game will boot, then crash when you begin to play.) Has anyone else had this problem?

------------------

It seems that there have been quite a number of compatibility issues between OSX.3 and existing software, not just Ambrosia titles. Check the (url="http://"http://www.ambrosiasw.com/cgi-bin/ubb/forumdisplay.cgi?action=topics&forum;=Help+on+the+way&number;=2&DaysPrune;=20&LastLogin;=")Help on the way(/url) board for more information. It looks like the Ambrosia folks are busy bug fixing incompatibilities left, right and centre. I'd say it's more likely an Apple issue that anything else...poor legacy control.

(edit: just one more reason for me not to change OSes for the sake of it.) 😛

Hi. I'm Dingo. Can I have your baby?

(This message has been edited by Dingo (edited 10-31-2003).)

Been looking at the recent flurry of posts on the beta mailing list, and thought I'd load up pop-pop beta again for the first time in an age. Couldn't see anyone on the tracker - still can't now. Anyway, thought I'd say (running 10.3 release here) that I've noticed a few anomolies with pop-pop 1.0.3fc6 and 10.3. Nothing too serious though other than it very frequently unexpectedly quits when blue-fading after I tell it to quit. I run the game windowed the whole time, running on a PBG4 12". My system's a little customised, being a developer (database backends, old developer previews, self-bootstrapped gcc's etc) but I doubt that makes much difference.

------------------

Another little issue with it in 10.3 is that on quitting, if I have safari open as the next app, Safari sometimes does not redraw behind pop-pop's window (either the interface bits or the content). I have to quit and relaunch safari to get it to redraw, though I can get buttons to redraw by clicking on them.
My guess is this is an Apple 10.3 issue, but might be worth investigating?
Saw squibix online on the beta tracker last night - but away sadly, so couldn't test. Also found a winbeta player too. Restored my confidence that I'm not quite as bad after my age off playing as I was being made to believe a day ago!

------------------

Pop-Pop also crashes on launch for me with 10.3, I've never even gotten to the startup screen. I hope they fix it!

have you tried deleting your prefs files? "~/Library/Preferences/pop-pop prefs"
1.0.2 and 1.0.3 both load up fine for me in 10.3 and 10.3.1

------------------

no way... no pop-pop under 10.3.1 :frown:

------------------

I have 10.3 (I recently upgraded straight from 9.2) and I although I don't have that particular problem with pop-pop, it still doesn't run properly. It seems to launch as it is supposed to, but when I click to start a versus game an error message tells me that I don't have two mice connected, even though I do. When I click OK, I am returned to the mode select screen again. If I try to start verses mode again, the problem is just the same. I don't know if the one player mode works normally or not, and I tried turning on 'Legacy Mode' but then the verses button just disappears.

Pop-pop doesn't work for me under 10.3, either. It crashes immediately upon loading. I have to force quit to get back to the Finder.

I'm using a wireless Kennsington mouse, could that have something to do with it? I've noticed that when I unplug the mouse and reboot, I can sometimes get into playing the game. However, it still crashes 95% of the time after that. With the mouse plugged in, instant crash.

When is 1.0.3 coming out? Seems like it's taking Ambrosia a long time to get Panther-compatible. I just registered pop-pop four months ago -- it's been unplayable for longer than I've had it! <sigh>

Cheers,
RW

Here is my crash log for pop-pop and 10.3. Note that I was using a generic USB mouse (not wireless) when this crash occurred. My wireless Kensington mouse usually crashes pop-pop on startup. However, the wired mouse crashed after quitting in the middle of a "Versus" game.

Here it is:

Yes Pop-Pop crashes here also... On MDD DP1.25Ghz (Sep 2002). Also on G4 Powerbook 1Ghz(17in). And on iMac G4 (1.25Ghz) 17 Inch. All run 10.3 and all have 512 Meg or more of ram. Mom often will not tell me when something crashes as she feels she is at fualt. So it has taken her this long to report this. :frown: Is there any cure? 10.2 is soooo Um u know!

~Dave

Yeah, 1.0.3 is on the way.
The beta builds seem to be pretty stable. It's still got some cosmetic issues, but it hasn't crashed on me since fc6.
Since I'm not a spokesperson for Ambrosia, I can't give an estimated release date, but rest assured, it's getting close.

Yes, the update is still being worked on, and with the holidays approaching it may take a bit, but believe me when I say they're all doing their best. Hang in there, and thanks.
