pop-pop ranking system, when you want the next tournament?

I think Danny isn't alone that we would like to have a ranking system. Lets see if we can come up with a good system. When we get something good in mind, then we can put it into action. I would like the ranking system to be tournament based. Some factors could be how many played in the tournament, how many were won ect.. extra points when someone wins a tournament.

As for a permanant tournament, it is safe to say one should be set up every week. I have Thursday off, I am going to host a tournament then. Before I do, what times would you like me to host it? (This way we give the UK crowd a chance.) Please note I am a really lazy person and don't want to have to get up too early!

Thank you!

While I certainly enjoyed playing in the recent tournament, I'd prefer to see a ranking system that isn't only tournament-based; cause what about all those folks who can't be there for the tournaments?!

pop-pop isn't set up for rankings. Managing a tournament based ranking system will be enough work. I still am hoping someone will suggest a good ranking system.

I think probably the best way to set up any sort of ranking system is to scale it on who is playing who.

For instance, you would need a standard variation, which would be say five points. So beating someone within ten wins of you would give you five points. Beating someone above ten wins of you, gives you ten points. Beating someone below ten wins of you gives you two points.

Also, you need to remove points for losing. For instance, you could have it so that losing to someone within ten wins of you means you lose 3 points. Losing to someone ten wins above you means you lose one point. Losing to someone ten wins below you means you lose five points.

This way, the beginning players have a much better chance of catching up with the players who have been here awhile.

I would propose that this system work sort of in the same way a tournament match does. If you want to play a ranked game, you need to put brackets around your name. If another player joins with brackets around their name, then both players understand that this game is for points.

Once you complete the game, mail the results to a set-up e-mail address and I'll keep track of the points. (or anklebiter will, I'm not sure at this time) Since there is no way of recording games at this time, everyone needs to be honest about this so we can keep track.

I don't have any problems with Thursday because I'm in college, but we might be eliminating high school age players in the United States because they would be in school at this time. Just a thought.

Also, if such a system WERE ever implemented I would like very much if all the e-mails had the same heading. Something like "Ranked Match".

And I would update the standings weekly, not daily. This way, if you were number 1 you could enjoy it for at least a week. Plus, I could sit down and do all the scores on one day, (probably Sunday) and post the results to a webpage.

We could have a page with just ranks on the Pop-Pop site, that I would update weekly.

I agree. I was hoping to catch you on AIM before I went to work. I haven't set a time yet, because I haven't talked to you, and I am hoping some people here may have an idea what time they would like to hold a tournament. Thankyou.

I wondered how Tennis-Ranking is working.
Ok, there are certain GrandSlam- and also ATP-Tournaments.
But how does it work, specifically?

Are there other known ranking-systems from other sports?

Where could we get some more definite information?

I guess a ranking would be great!
Really great!

And greatest of all would be a ranking within the game.

Well whatever. I like my idea too. 😄 But I'd be happy to run whatever ranking system the community decides on, or if someone else wants to take care of it I suppose I can repost the results or something: now that I have a pretty (url="http://"http://www.squibix.net/dan/pop/rankings.html")page(/url) for em. Prior to the establishment of the real system, anyone sends me match results I'll see where they come out as far as ranks go. I'm what we call underemployed these days, so I have alot of time for this sort of thing! 😉

Hey, you got me wrong!
Of course I like your idea of organizing it and I well participate of that idea!

It's just, that I thought on the one hand you won't be lucky to record this rankings till the end of your days and on the other hand - this discussion can use any idea there is can't it?

🙂

Hey, I am happy there are some of you guys who would organize those touneys and rankingstuff!
Thx ...

Hey, glad to see you registered! Welcome to our happy family. 😄 And sorry about my post, I didn't mean you at all. I was just responding to the general tenor of the topic. But really I don't mind anyways: I don't want to take over anything anyone else wants to do, or split up the community. But until we get something else I'd love to host rankings, if anyone sends me their scores.

So the provisional rankings are up: take a look at em (url="http://"http://www.squibix.net/dan/pop/rankings.html")here(/url) if you care to. I have a column for IM names, but nobody who plays pop-pop seems to use IM, or at least want to reveal their screen names. Perhaps I should substitute email addresses instead?

Anyways, my current plan is to update the list once a week--Sunday night probably. If there's a tournament before then I'll factor in the tournament results; otherwise I'll give people a point for every win they tell me about, and two points if the person they beat has more than five points more than them. Also with every update I'll subtract a number of points from everyone, which I suppose'll very based on the average number of points that come in that week. So that's that. I know there are all kinds of problems with the scheme, but it'll have to do for now.

So now's your time to advance, before other people catch on and start sending in scores! Maybe you can even pass SHOES, if he isn't paying attention! 😄 (thinking about that I realize that I might have undervalued the previous tournaments--at least the most recent two--but I'll deal with that problem if it arises).

(edit: d'oh! I meant to post this in the other topic. Oh well, it's all one)

(This message has been edited by Danny (edited 02-25-2003).)

I am still looking for a good time (MST) to host a pop-pop tournament on Thursday.
