This is such an awesome and well-made game. I've been playing this for 3 days straight against the computer on easy-mode, and have yet to win a single game. I am godlike at Unreal tournament, a master of Myth, and a legendary pilot in Nova but in this game... I suck!
This game is so fun, I was wondering if a few of you pros could help me out:
What characters do you usually play as and why? How do I get rid of those grey bricks my opponent sends me? Is there a way for me to get my ball to move faster? What strategies do you use to knock out lots of bricks at once? How do you take out those individual bricks once they get near the bottom of your screen?

All of them. But the 'best' are Mini-T, Bombastic, Tex and that Zap-guy (can't remember his name though)

Hit them once, they break, hit them twice they disappear.

Move the mouse upwards while hitting the ball and the ball will move a lot faster. You have to actually hit the ball, not just catch it.

Charge the paddle (either left-click or press option (alt)). On the left of your screen, you see some yellow energy bars, each can be charged into your paddle and for each energy charged to your paddle, you can hit through another brick. I.e. if you charge your paddle with three energy bars, you can hit through three bricks in one hit. Also, fast diagonal hits prove more efficient than vertical hits.

Use the magnet (hold down Command (apple-key) or hold the right-mouse-boutton) while playing, and the ball comes flying to your paddle. Hold the ball untill it is at your paddle and move the paddle under the bricks near the bottom. Release the magnet.
Read the manual as well.
Practise your aim in puzzle mode.
