This is most likely a Mac-implementation issue since Mac users are the only ones liable to be stuck with 1.4, anyway. (No slam intended, but it's the truth).
I doubt that, since all of this was originally written on a Mac and tested on a Mac with Java 1.4.2, we'll see when IT specifies which OS he is running.
