Beta Testers needed

Hi everyone, I've got something in a rough, early beta format.

I need about a dozen people who are willing to beta-test it on a serious basis.

Requirements:
1 You need to be able to accept a 21MB .sitx file via email (these files often seem to swell in email to as much as twice as big)
2 You need to commit to playing through two characters and taking notes as you play
3 You need to commit to a six week turnaround for the complete playthroughs, with possible blind alleys
4 You need to accept the usual risks of beta testing (smoke coming from your monitor, risk of arrest, etc etc)
5 You have to commit to not disclosing anything to anybody not on the beta programme

If interested, please could you email me at martin.turner@unforgettable.com with Beta in the subject line. Please let me know what your experience level is (don't inflate it - I need a range of experience levels including beginners).

For now I'm really interested in Mac users on OS X. However, if you're an OS9 or a Win user and you're prepared to put up with tinkering (eg, making your own windows conversion) then I'll be happy to have you on board.

Regards

Martin Turner

I would be greatly honored to beta-test for you.

I am on a Windows XP machine, though, Service Pack 2, but I have successfully converted large plug-ins before.

EDIT: E-mail sent.

I'm sorry I can't accept, but I have to say it seems to me Stuffit 7.5 for Windows does not recognise sitx. Stuffit <= 8 do, but they don't keep resource forks, making a plug in sitx unusable on Windows. Just so you know...

By the way, congratulations in advance for your soon-to-come thousandth post, Martin (999 as of post, 8/31, 12h31 board's time).

Hmm...that might be an issue. I'll wait to see what Mr. Turner decides to do before committing to a course of action.

Meh. By the time I edit my post you already did it. Your thousandth post.

But then a new problem arises: the zip compression format does not support resource forks. Panther's built-in zip feature makes up for that, though, by saving the resource fork with an odd sceme, that only Panther and the most recent version of Stuffit, that runs only in OSX and doesn't keep resource forks for Windows, can understand. So you should MacBinary encode the plug files before zipping them, so that on Mac Stuffit recursively expands encoded files in the archive, and PC users directly obtain .bin files from any zip uncompressing program, .bin that they can feed to the converter. Yeah, It's slightly annoying. But these are the conclusions I've reached.

I can receive the file from UE RD if it is more than 20 MB

Martin Turner: I'd e-mail you in an instant, except my e-mail accounts limit me to 3MB attachments. (However, if I get a Gmail invite--which are currently being given out by various members on Banter and Brawl--, that problem won't exist.)

Is a one-time, password-protected download possible?

Regarding Stuffing, (url="http://"http://www.ambrosiasw.com/webboard/Forum26/HTML/017641.html")pipleine(/url) says that Stuffit 5.5 yields better results when stuffing and binning than many later versions.

On its way to UE RD in three separate files. Let me know if there's a problem.

I'll volunteer my iDisk space, once I get an e-mail account that can handle the attachment size. I've got more than enough space.

Perhaps EVula could lend some web space? What about using something like Spymac? I understand that they offer 100MB or so of storage. (If the file is under 20MB, a free 60 day trial .Mac account could work as well.)

Edit: Martin Turner: There is a (url="http://"http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=52369")way(/url) that you can upload to the Public folder in my .Mac space. What OS are you running? Let me know if you want to use this option, since I'd have to change a setting for my iDisk.

It's sort of ironic. I got the Gmail account, but the attachment size limit is 10MB.

Martin Turner: If you can break the file into multiple files that are under 10MB, I'll give you my Gmail address. Then, with your permission, I'll upload the files to my iDisk space. I'll then e-mail you the address and you can distribute it as you see fit. Alternatively, I'll put the files into my Public folder, protected by whatever password you deem fit, and then you can distribute the password and address as you see fit.

Sent off an email, but realized I didn't know what my mail limit is. I have the space for large attachments. I'm on OSX 10.3.4 and I do have Nova testing experience and developing experience (although I've never released anything of my own).
