I was refering more to having alt-frames while just flying, but as...wait. Can you have banking animations and alt-frames in the same sprite? I don't think so, which makes my earlier point somewhat moot. However, you could have a large number of repetitive frames of the ship simply flying, and then have 1 set of rolling frames, which would have the effect of making the ship fly normally for a while, and occaisionally do a roll. Only problem is that it is indeed NOT random, and can be timed, if you like. Ah, well....

(edit: I swear I had more posts than that...hopefully that's one of the bugs being worked out. Meh)

That would work in principal but the player would have to stop turning on the exact rotation frame the animation happens on. If they didn't stop, the ship would begin to roll, get maybe 2 or 3 frames into the animation, and as soon as the ship terns to the next rotation frame, the ship would snap back to its normal - level position.
That's just going to be ugly as hell.
And yes, you're right. Using alt-frames as animations does in-fact mean you can't have banking frames.
The words "goat" and "blow" spring readily to mind.

Exactly.

Wrong. You can have AltImages in a separate rle8/D. Look at the Thunderforge.

Note that the first four flags in this field are mutually exclusive - i.e. you can have a ship that banks, unfolds, changes appearance when it is carrying a certain other ship type, or animates in sequence, but these effects can't be combined.
(edit) Okay, altframes, yes, you're right. The NOVA Bible; a wonderfully transparent document...

Please note today that I won't do a shän anno ta ted template, I'm leavin it to a real graphics guy. All that stuff that goes over, replaces, etc... I fear I would get everything wrong, and it's hard to test since you need to make stuff for it.
Barrel rolling ship
Download the file named Barrel rollign ship.. or something close to that.
This is my continuosly of axis rotating rolling ship...
I met some EnRLE problems and had to put the ship down to this size..
It´s a 2.1 mb download, still for those interested it´s probably worth it.
