not really Ambrosia but hard disks

I have been looking around, but I can't seem to find an answer for this.

To try Mac OS-X, I would like to have a larger boot hard disk than my current 12 gig, so I can partition it. A lot of my older software is not carbonized, so it won't run under Classic, as far as I know.

Apple says my G3 Yosemite has an Ultra ATA IDE controller and internal hard disk. The largest hard disk I have found in the stores that say Ultra ATA are Apple modules that cost $269 for 40 gigs. There are other internal drives available that say they are Mac-compatible, with three times the storage for half the price. They state ATA-100, ATA-133, EIDE, etc.

Would any of these reasonably priced hard drives replace my current drive and work in my G3? or does anyone know where I can go to get unbiased technical information about the various designations?

Software doesn't need to be carbonised to run under classic. The whole point of classic is to run programs that haven't been carbonised. You get some programs that just won't run under classic for whatever reason but not many, so you should get away fine without an OS 9 partition. However, I have a 10GB drive partitioned into 8GB and 2GB on which I run OS X and OS 9 consecutively and have had no problems with disk space.

While I am primarily a PC user now, I do still support several macs at work. I know I know, it's kind of like "no, but I stayed at a Holiday Inn Express last night..."

Anyway, your Ultra ATA controller is simply an ATA/66 controller. You can use any IDE drive really, just that the faster ones won't gain you anything. I read an article where someone put a 7200 RPM 120GB Maxtor DiamondMAX ATA/133 drive in with no trouble. Likely the worst that'll happen if you get a drive that isn't happy is that it will run in regular DMA-33 mode and you'll get slower transfer rates. BUT-

There are other considerations though. If you have a revision 1 Yosemite, the IDE controller chip has limitations that will most likely lead to data corruption if you try to change the hard drive. If you can find the controller chip, look for "-402" printed at the end of the part # on it. They also have quite a few drive compatibility lists there that folks have put in their machines, but a lot of them are pretty old, so finding those part #s may be iffy. It also lookes like if you have a revision 2 machine, you can simply add another drive and leave your 12GB hd be, thanks to an updated drive bracket to hold a second drive. Damn straight. I put a 7200 RPM 20GB (not 120, but whatever) Maxtor DiamondMax Plus 5120 drive in my 300MHz Beige G3, and aside from the problem with it causing my computer to commit suicide from overheating, no problems.

I tried it!

Had a little problem with the partitioning. After I partitioned my 12G hard disk, I discovered that my Retrospect recovery CD had an older version of the app than I had been backing up with. So I had to load OSX alone and then use it to get to the web. Downloaded a 30-day trial of Retrospect's latest and used that to recover my OS9 (and everything else).

So I put OS9 in the second partition. I have already found one game which quits under Classic, but works if I startup with OS9. But I am wondering about my other applications. What determines whether an application runs under OSX or under Classic? I know that Nova can run under either, and I assume at least that some of my other applications can also.

I noticed when I started up Classic the first time that it said it had to make some changes in the Classic system folder. Although it said that they would not affect starting up from the OS9 system. Does it make a difference if you install OSX over an existing OS9? Should I clear everything out, reload my OS9, and then re-install OSX? Does the OSX installer move things like preferences and applications to new positions in the directories when it installs, which apparently you don't get if you put OS9 back in after you already have OSX installed?

I would appreciate any advice that anyone with more experience can give me. As usual Apple doesn't explain anything.

Carbon applications are the ones that can run under both OS 9 and OS X. While in OS X if you Get Info on an application there will be a little checkbox allowing you to "Open in the classic environment" if it's a carbon app. Or if it's a classic only application it will say "Kind: Classic Application".

The OS X installer doesn't make any changes to a pre-existing OS 9. It does not move any applications or preferences around. The changes it makes when you launch Classic for the first time are necessary for it to run and will always happen no matter the order in which you've installed your OSes. You'll be fine the way you've got it.
